Not long ago, a FATAL stabbing occured just 30 seconds from my doorstep. . There was another fatal stabbing last week in Hackney, the 44th homicide in the capital this year. Last year there were a total of 132 homicides. The highest annual rate for a decade . . Growing up in Hackney was tough as hell, especially as an 11 year old coming from another continent, far-away country the Philippines. It wasn't easy, new language, different culture, and London's unexpected cold violence. It definitely wasn't the London I saw in movies‍♀️. . The early/mid 2000s was a madness. Knife and gun crime was everywhere. There was beef before, during, and after school. It was endless. . ◾️Borough v Borough. . ◾️School v School. . ◾️Post Code v Post Code. . ◾️Youngers v Olders. . Hackney was voted the worst place to live in the UK (Channel 4, 2006). Phones, money, lives and futures were being taken. . Despite this, I'm forever grateful for two things... A LIFE lesson and a music genre. . 1️⃣It taught me that despite your circumstances, you can control your own future. A lot of people went to jail, a lot of people got distracted and never reached their potential. However, if you keep your head down, stay positive and focus it will pay off . .
