Hakuba is unique in that it is surrounded by a wealth of cultural experiences ⛩ One of the best is Matsumoto Castle ⁣ ⁣ Built in 1504 Matsumoto Castle is the oldest surviving castle in Japan and has been recognized as a national treasure by the government for its historical significance, unique design, and impressive structure ⁣ ⁣ While most Japanese castles are painted white, the leadership of the Ogasawara Clan ordered the castle painted black to instill fear in the hearts of would be attackers. ⚔️⚔️ The color led to the castle being nicknamed #CrowCastle (#烏城)⁣ ⁣ The castle has six floors with elaborate defense stations intended to hold of a siege attack ⚔️⚔️ The castle is also unique in that it sits in an open plain where as most Japanese Castles are perched on large hills making a siege more difficult.⁣ ⁣ Details: Visitors can access the castle grounds free of charge and tour the castle for ¥600 ⁣ ⁣ Access from Hakuba Station: JR Oita Line to Kita Matsumoto Station followed by a 1k walk through a beautiful historic town. ‍♂️‍♀️⁣ ⁣ One way Cost: ¥1,140 (Free with JR Pass) @japanexplorer
