I am amazed at the ease with which some saree sakhis flaunt innovative drapes, to the extent that some of them can drape a sack and make it look uber fashionable. I tried experimenting, but should admit, the results were disastrous. Then I decided, I'm happy with them frilled sleeves.
Traversing the distance from Bengal to Gujarat, in this oh so comfortable mul cotton Ajrak saree from @vrajbhoomiindia. I had heard great reviews about Vraj Bhoomi, but was not sure about shopping online. The touch and feel effect is extremely important for me while buying a saree. As luck would have it, they were exhibiting in namma Bengaluru, when I dropped by at the venue by chance. After draping the saree, I can vouch for the fact that it is the most comfortable ajrakh I have draped so far. The fabric simply stays in place without any pins.

Some days require me to don the superwoman role, except that the saree pallu replaces the Cape.
Saree of the day is a handblock printed Kalamkari, from Pedana near Machilipatnam, for Raji @designerrajirm #andhamainatelugucheera theme. Paired with a pen kalamkari blouse.
Saree is from the workshop of Srinivas Pitchuka, who is one the few artisans practising the age old tradition of handblock printing with natural dyes, when chemical dyes and screen printing have commercially replaced the art form. I was privileged to see this art form first hand and understand the science and intricacies behind the art. It is rather sad to learn that the vegetable dyed hand block printed kalamkari fabric has a better market overseas than in India. The focus is more on upholstery, home linen, carpets etc and sarees are few and far between. Unfortunately when screen or digital printed sarees are available at a fraction of the cost, the handblock printed ones are struggling to find a market.
This form of block printing was the most sought after fabric from India, that sent Europe into a frenzy few centuries back and wars were fought to gain control over Machilipatnam. Vijayalaxmiji @vijayalaxmichhabra has written a detailed post on Chintz fabric, with pictures of the fabric maintained at a museum in Holland, with it's interesting history.
GI Tag for this art doesn't seem to have helped. It was rather disappointing to see printed sarees being sold in government showrooms as well.
This saree is power loomed mul cotton. Srinivas is planning to launch vegetable dyed handblock printed sarees in organic khadi cotton. Eagerly waiting.

Notun jama (new clothes), amritti (a special Bengali jalebi), dorbesh (the aromatic laddu) and paat perey khawa (a full-fledged Bengali meal)… and if you did get an invite from a shop to visit them on April 15th, you would be treated to freshly fried nimki (maida patties) and mihidana (sweet mini pearls). Because they were ushering in Poila Boisakh with the new haalkhata (balance register)… .
.
My Bengali friends… these words do ring a bell, right? Words laden with memories. The new clothes were not as fancy as the ones for Durga Pujo but they still smelt new. I remember Mamoni putting the crisp tapejama (kantha stitched mulmul pinafore) on me after my bath on Poila Boisakh. In the evening it was a new frock from Gariahat while she draped her new taant. Dada wore his new white t-shirt and shorts. We went for a family dinner. After spending the evening with Thakumoni. My mother believed that if the first day of the Bengali year was spent well, the rest of it would be splendid. .
She still believes so… Like all our mothers, I am sure. So, no matter where we all are placed in the world, we Bengalis observe Poila Boisakh in our own small way… Because in the age of global Bengalis, where all of us are living our dreams, pursuing jobs and aspiring for better lives, there is still a part of us that pines for home… You can take a Bengali out of Bengal, but can you ever take Bengal out of him?
If you feel the same, join me by writing your feelings about Poila Boisakh (or new year celebrations in other parts of the country). Tag me, your friends and use the hashtag #bangalirpoila … Let us make this Bengali and the other New Years special by drumming up fond memories…
