At Monday's birthday party, the high point was the red velvet cake. Not the games Bono played. Because, he and I were tucked on the sofa clutching on to our lives. Courtesy the rowdy children who were on a balloon bursting and boxing each other spree. The mother of the birthday girl helplessly stared at the plunder. .
Suddenly Bono muttered, "Why are they behaving like hooligans?" "So, you know how not to behave ever, right?" was what I managed. .
Aggression. A disease our society suffers from. Children are affected by it as well. I see them watching terrible serials promoting violence on TV. Some irresponsible parents take their little ones for films not fit for kids. Sad.
.
Remember, the leash is in your hand. To ensure the child is psychologically and emotionally healthy.
Spend quality time with your bub. Talk to him, hug him, read stories together, listen to music, play with Lego blocks, paint, keep him engaged with interesting games, do craft... Praise him when he does well. And yes, strictly monitor TV and laptop time. How your child behaves depends a lot on what he is seeing. .
And hearing. Children are impressionable. So, every expletive coming out of your mouth in the heat of the moment will snugly tuck itself in your child's mind. Don't offload your frustrations on the poor kid. Bringing up a baby isn't a cakewalk. But it was our decision to bring him on the planet right? Brace up for the roller coaster ride. .
Remember children are extremely intelligent. They understand love. And the lack of it. The squishy hugs matter. Much more than the costly video game. Explain things patiently.
.
When necessary admonish your child. This doesn't mean you love him any less. In the absence of any reprimand, your LO will perceive you as a softy. You will not like the repercussions, I assure you. .
Yesterday Bono got a hollering while studying. Later, we sat by each other listening to music. Bono faces the music when he is naughty. Does that mean we love him any less? Hell no! And he knows that!
.
As a mother, every day is a lesson. Most often, Bono's behaviour act as teaching modules... As parents, we have to be receptive to those... .

I don't see burflower trees anywhere in Delhi. You know which ones I'm talking about right? Kodom phool. The round flowers that resemble laddus. The big ones that are made during Diwali. If they landed in any child's hands, the petals would be duly picked to reveal a smaller laddu. Like maybe ummm a Kheer Kodom. Once you eat away the outer layer made of Khowa kheer, a smaller juicier rasgulla peaks out from within. Maybe that's how the sweet got its name. From the Kodom phool. The beautiful yet curious flower symbolising the onset of monsoons. Hanging from the branches of a tree. Egging little boys and girls to pick them... . .
.
At the park we played as kids in Calcutta, two giant burflower trees were stationed at two corners. Their branches heavy with the blooming flowers tantalisingly hanging through the fresh green leaves. An orangish yellow round with slivers of white. When they plonked down on the pavement, we ran to pick them up. The fingers instantly pulled out the petals to reveal a small hard laddu. It was a game of sorts. For us girls mainly. The boys hit each other with that little ball. The ones that remained on the pavement bore the onslaught of the pedestrians' trampling feet. Their slushy distorted shape releasing a tangy whiff in the moist air. Sometimes I carried home the petals in the pocket of my pinafore. Because I loved how they smelt. A soft pleasant scent. .
.
I read somewhere that there are recipes involving kodom phool now... Floral chicken dumplings and all. Maybe, if it were today and I found a burflower tree in Delhi, I would bring the beautiful blooms tied in my sari pallu back home to show Bono a little something from my childhood. Before plucking them with him so that we could make some aromatic dumplings together... . . .
