Catching up on a few days missed of #harpril. • Day 5 Harp Rebel: It would be the amount I hit my harp. I don't think harps were originally designed for this but they make such good percussion sounds it's hard not to. Sometimes I worry that it will wreck it but once I heard that they soundboard are built crazy strong since there is over 1,000lbs of pressure from the strings (that's why changing/breaking strings can get a bit scary). All my harp hitting was inspired by @amyturkharp, you should check her stuff out! • Day 6 Practice Studio: mine is currently my bedroom in a house I share with 4 other roommates. Not living the practice room dream but maby one day I will. So far I haven't driven them crazy with all my practicing • Day 8: Guilty Pleasure: definitely Latin American pop music. #harpril Day 8: Harp guilty pleasure || Whenever I find myself with time to kill in an acoustically pleasing space before a gig, I play whatever my heart desires. As this was a Christmas gig and I love cadenzas (another guilty harp pleasure ‍♀️), I pulled out this familiar one. I wasn’t doing a Nutcracker run, so sure, there’s a lot that could be improved in terms of cleanliness and even tone quality. But I literally could not stop smiling because it was such fun to play in a low pressure, high acoustic quality setting. ✨

Handel Harp Concerto in Bb on the lever harp. . For the hundreds (6) of you who messaged to ask how easy it is to play on the lever harp, you can sit with your scores and mark in when I change levers! . Briefly, it’s not too hard and I’m playing nearly everything I play on pedal harp ( I work from the Barenreiter edition). It needs a bit of practise and a few of the lower accidentals in the bass are missing but it was very fun to work on. . This is my #harpril day errrrrr something. #harpril Day 2: meet my harp! || This is Giselle (more commonly referred to as Harpy or Harpy-harp, I’m afraid). She’s a Lyon & Healy Style 11 and has lots of history from previous owners, including being played at the Hollywood Bowl! I’m so very grateful to have adopted her just before starting college. She has served me well and has a beautiful, rich tone quality from many years of experience. ✨. . On this same subject...harps are incredibly expensive. As I mentioned above, I am beyond grateful to my parents and grandparents who invested in this instrument for my future (16-year-old me chose a harp instead of a car). I understand that is a rare privilege. I hope to someday be able to give back to the community, especially granting young students harp opportunities they might otherwise miss. It is inspiring to watch several of my harp colleagues who work with programs to enable those opportunities! . To anyone reading, keep investing in the future of music. I know it changed my life because several people did.
