The 1977 docent training class was taken into the Throne Room and asked to look at the carpet then write a word, expand that into a phrase, then create a sentence. Their homework was to use that sentence to write a poem. This is the poem of Sally McClellen, a docent in training at the time: “My eyes see: A carpet of red the rich color of wine A robing room door of unique design So distinctly Hawaiian in warmth and line My eyes see: Regal Pier tables representing a past Of elegant beauty that was meant to last And so different from today’s life---go gaudy and fast. And lastly My eyes see: Victorian chandeliers that sparkle and glow What a story they could tell for all to know Of laughter and gayety--------and of sorrow and of woe!” #IolaniPalace #HawaiiHistory #HawaiianHistory #HawaiiMuseum

Outrigger canoes first arrived to the Hawaiian Islands around 200 AD. Some large enough to hold up to 80 people, and were filled with essential items like edible plants, water and animals to ensure a safer voyage for the brave explorers who went to search for land. By tracking the migration patterns of birds seen overhead, explorers discovered the Hawaiian Islands. Queen Lili’uokalani of Hawaii (1838-1917) was the last Hawaiian sovereign to govern the islands. The Island was annexed by the United States in 1898. Her statement of surrender to the U.S concluded with: “...now, to avoid any collision of armed forces and perhaps loss of life, I do, under this protest, and impelled by said forces, yield my authority until such time as the Government of the United States shall, upon the facts being presented to it, undo the action of its representative and reinstate me in the authority which I claim as the constitutional sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands” #historicpreservation #hawaiianhistory #queenliliuokalani #antiquephoto #americanhistory #worldhistory #historylovers #victorianera #victorian #hawaii #antiquedealer #zanathiavintagejewelry #oldphotos #1800s #storytellingphotography #oldportrait #victorianstyle #antiquephotography #historicphoto #antiquedealersofinstagram #preservation

In the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Lahaina has become incredibly commercialized and caters solely to tourists. As I planned my day here I prioritized visiting the historical sites such as the Old Lahaina Courthouse, Baldwin Home, Wo Hing Museum, and Old Lahaina Prison (Thank you Lahaina Restoration Foundation!) The history of Hawaii is both fascinating and frustrating. This banyan tree was planted in 1873 to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first Christian missionaries. That same year, the Hawaiian sovereignty was illegally overthrown, and eventually annexed by the USA. I guarantee 90% of tourists don't actively seek to educate themselves on the history of where they travel. I get it. History is complicated. History is frustrating. Very, very frustrating. I know, though, that learning this history gives me a greater appreciation for the land I'm in, for what I see and take pictures of. And I continue to do so and hope I can continue to grow as a conscious traveler. Do you make it a priority to learn about where you travel, either beforehand or during your trip?

I went to Thomas Square today and met King Kamehameha III. He was very tall and noble. He didn’t say a word.
