I have no idea where the time has gone, but it’s hard to grasp that it’s been nine whole years since she left us on June 1, 2010. The smell of fresh-cut grass, blooming flowers, and spring, however, takes me right back to that beautiful sunny June day and the days that followed. June 2010 was a gorgeous one, but it was full of darkness for many of us. This day is to remember Melissa in all of her witty, sassy, and glam glory, but it also really got me thinking of the domino effect of suicide and the impact on the people left behind. Nine years ago, I would have had no idea that her suicide would continue to have such an impact so many years later; that I would even still post about it or feel that sting seeing the date on my phone. I’ve come to realize that her death divided my life – all of our lives – into the “before” and “after” and many of us would never be the same again. Her death resulted in countless therapy visits for many people, anxiety, depression, destruction, sickness, and – of course – blanketing sadness. Sometimes I want to shake myself and say, “come on…move on from this already,” and wonder if people are sick of hearing me talk about it, so long after the fact. In the nine years since, it’s come up on first dates, in casual conversation, and in teary late-night chats with people who have been through it. The truth is, it could take a lifetime to talk it all through and try to attempt to figure it out. In the past nine years, other friends of friends have taken their own lives too. I can only imagine they feel the same way. If anyone needs to chat about it, I am here. Missing you and your mama, Melissa.
