Fury-The Hero Dog. At Portumna Castle, a local tradition tells of how a girl fell from a window from Portumna Castle and a dog lying underneath broke her fall. The girl survived while unfortunately the dog suffered a broken back and died. A commerative plaque dating April 1797 was erected outside the porch in memory of the dog 'Fury' that saved the girl's life. Archaeological digs in 1997 uncovered the remains of a small dog with indications of suffering from a broken back. Nails were also recovered at eack corner of the grave suggesting a coffin was used to bury the hero. The remains suggest the dog reached maturity and local traditions say that the dog was 11 years of age. New Family Treasure Trails within Pendle Hill Landscape The two new family #treasuretrails based around the villages of #sabden and #Barrowford have been launched this week. Year 5s from Barrowford primary, Barrowford st. Thomas and Sabden primary schools have been working with @treasuretrailsuk company to create family self-guided and quiz based walks within the local landscape. The children spent several days out exploring their home villages looking at heritage and places of interest and devising a series of clues that will guide you to where X marks the spot! Thanks to Stuart Marshall, treasure trail partner and the The Ernest Cook Trust PHLP outdoor learning officer for supporting the project. The Trail leaflets will be on sale at The Milking Parlour, Sabden and at the @pendleheritagecentre in Barrowford, plus the 3 schools. Further sale locations will be announced soon.
