Screwball comedies from the Golden Age of Hollywood never got screwier than 'His Girl Friday', probably my favourite black & white movie of all time. - - Director Howard Hawks had taken a first shot at this type of fast-talking, wise-cracking oddball romance a year earlier with 'Bringing Up Baby'. That's good too, but to my mind it doesn't have the richness or pure energy of its successor. Katherine Hepburn is a bit too irritating, Cary Grant too dim. In 'Friday', though, Grant is at his very best as the smooth and unscrupulous newspaper editor, and he's more than equally matched by Rosalind Russell on sparkling form as his top reporter and ex-wife. - - And such a great script! It's adapted, of course, from the stage hit 'The Front Page' (itself filmed several times) about two battling newspapermen. But here, in a brilliant touch, the character of Hildy Johnson (same name as in the stage play) gets a sex change, adding additional spark to their relationship. I love the dark edges too; how many other comedies can you think of with police corruption, kidnapping, a murderer and a suicide? - - And the speed of it. Fast talk was never so fast again. Hawks revealed that the script was adapted specially: unnecessary words were inserted at the beginning and end of key lines of dialogue so that the characters could talk over one another - as they would have in real life - without obscuring the meaning of what they were saying. The only problem was that every time a new actor joined the set, it took them a day or two to get up to speed with everyone else. Sheer class. - What do you think?
