Wanted to use this clip from Gaudreau’s 6 point game this year. There is 2 key elements of this play that make it all work. -
1. Monahan’s read. .
Monahan does a fantastic job of reading the play and drawing in the 3 devils players and freezing them to allow Gaudreau to walk in with tons of speed. .
That little anchor move with his feet buys him just enough time to assess his options, allow the defence to bite, and feed Johnny at the perfect time. -
2. Gaudreau’s speed
.
Gaudreau enters the zone flying, and recognizes that 49 on the devils is having a hard time reading his assignment. He leverages this knowledge and cuts in hard to find a lane and create chaos for the devils defensive assignment, ultimately leading to the goal.

Great post by @goalie_engineering showing us why shooting from the slot (red zone) is so effective. Goalies only have so much reaction time before they have to make intelligent guesses that comes from being in the proper position for every shot.

Another great drill! I like to have my players focus on coming off the boards with quick footwork and ripping a shot on net. The best players know how to make plays happen off the boards.
•
I ended the drill with a one on one battle forcing the forward to dig deep and get the puck to the net and not letting the defense touch the puck but instead dig deep and do any means necessary to prevent the forward from getting the shot off.

Defenseman alert
Low hard shots are more effective than high “bardown” shots from a distance. Turning the toe down and ripping the puck 6” inches off the ground aiming for corners is where the best deflections occurs creating a scramble and choas in front of the net. Creating choas is how you create multiple offensive chances; putting the dman on their heels at all times. #dmandrills #defenseman #hockeydman #hockeyiq #hockeydevelopment #hockeydrills #hockeyskills #hockeygoals #hockeyhits #hockeyfights #tblightning #tampabaylightning #tampabayhockey #tampahockey #floridahockey #amaliearena #boltssocial #boltsnation #bethethunder #lightningmadehockey #lightningmade #streethockey #kucherov #stamkos #hedman #everbladeshockey #goldenwolveshockey #minnesotahockey #michiganhockey
1. Puck carrier always has advantage because of puck possession. It’s called the 1st mover advantage. Everyone else reacts to his gestures and speed.
2. Barzal increases the pace by his speed and using the offensive zone like a NASCAR track.
3. He specifically uses the hash marks on the circle to stop and create space by drop passing the puck to Leddy and Leddy to Eberle. Think of the hash marks as exits on a highway. The exits are lanes towards the net. When a player “take an exit” he is committing to a lane and attacking the net whether he has the puck or not. #hockeyiq #matbarzal #mattbarzal #newyork #newyorkcity #newyorkislandershockey #newyorkislanders #brooklyn #hockey #nyhockey #nhl #stanleycup #hockeyintelligence #rookieoftheyear #howtohockey #howtoscoregoals #hockeygoals #goals #khl #puck #hockeyislife #hockeylife #hockeylanes #shaperecognition #hockeygram #hockeydevelopment #eberle #johntavares #nascar #barzal
How do you teach hockey sense? “Hockey sense” or “hockey IQ” is an intangible skill coaches often talk about & is critical in finding success as a player moves up levels & matures as a hockey player. It can be the separating factor between a good & a great player. But how can coaches help foster the development of high hockey IQ?
Unfortunately, there is no one right answer to this question as it is the culmination of experiences, learning moments, situational practice, and so many additional internal & external factors. However, coaches have a responsibility to develop an learning environment within a team & within practices that fosters the development of hockey sense.
One way to do this by adding game-like situational competitions that have a mid-drill progression built into them. Competition within practice forces the players to work against each other, reacting to the different variables thrown at them by the opposing player, just like in a game.
Additionally, adding in a mid-drill progression not only helps replicate the fluid changing of game scenarios, but it forces the player to read the play, make a decision, & react to the changing play. This type of mental decision making & reaction within a drill helps the cognitive development of a player (aka hockey sense) in practice.
This can be accomplished even in a simple drill like the video where a 1v1 quickly transitions into a 2v1 down low. Game-like situation, competition, & a progression/variable that all players must quickly react to.
Help foster cognitive development & hockey sense by providing less predetermined outcomes by the coaches & more decision making by the players.
Please let me know your thoughts & any additional ways you can grow hockey IQ, I am always curious & learning!
