Curiosity is a “cognitive motivator”. It is rewarding for its own sake. If our horses, students, kids, employees, dogs are NOT curious, trying to *reward* them for it could be as harmful as trying to *force* it. — Living on an island with virtually no natural predators gives a better example of natural curiosity. First thing you notice is how *brave* and *relaxed* the wildlife appears. — Compared to all other places I’ve lived, the animals here come much closer, stay longer, and when they move away, it’s without panic, just a casual move to another spot. The deer and the rabbits, the birds on the fences, a wildlife photographer doesn’t need a pricey long lens here (except for the eagles — they are still waaaaay up in the tall trees ) — It’s the first thing I noticed in Iceland. The birds, the sheep, the cows, The virtually “wild” (unhandled) horses... they sometimes make it hard to drive the rural back roads. They are not looking for food... not waiting for a hay drop ... this is summer, surrounded by gazillions of acres of grass. — This is what healthy, natural, intrinsic motivation looks like. — It is a shame we have forgotten. But not surprising, because we so rarely see it in our typical domestic settings, especially the “well-trained” animals. — I had mostly killed the intrinsic curiosity in my horses by making it clear that they were to “explore” ONLY what and when and how I *approved and cued*. — Sure, it was only when in training or being handled by humans, but... what did I EXPECT would happen when I basically *poisoned* the natural joy of expression, enthusiasm, exploration unless explicitly ASKED for? — And worse, they no longer had self-efficacy and trust in their bodies, which is a prerequisite for curiosity. — I am relieved to have seen my horses — despite all I did — recover their natural curiosity. The intrinsically-rewarded, built-in-by-nature desire to see/smell/hear/taste/feel/learn. To take in more sensory data. To feed the brain and body. — Novelty and “enriched sensory environments” literally feed the brain with life-enhancing chemicals. Stay curious. SUPPORT curious. It is nature’s gift!

Life is only a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see (Trudy Symeonakis Vesotsky) ❤. We could allow ourselves a little bit more, I guess. There are so many possibilities of seeing things. Isabel and Neisti at Baden-Württemberg championships As promised to update in english as well after having reached 10k, I‘ll start with it now. For everyone who maybe hasn‘t been following me for a long time: In the picture there‘s Neisti, my 14 years old icelandic horse with my little sister Isabel. It was the first time for her to ride fourgait on a competition and they got the second place :) Kurz auf Deutsch: Weil viele gefragt haben, ob ich nicht auch auf Englisch schreiben könnte, fange ich das jetzt mal an.
