Photo-documenting all the cool stuff on the bathroom walls before we cover it with sheetrock tomorrow. We're leaving the firring strips there, so it will all stay preserved under the new walls. 1. Three layers of wallpaper: a paisley or arabesque print that's the original wallpaper from the late 1880s, a tile pattern that's likely from the early 20th century, and a gorgeous floral from probably the 1940s. 2. A closer look at the tile-pattern paper. 3. A geometric print wallpaper on the opposite (east) wall. This space was at least two different rooms at various points in the house's history. 4 & 5. What the walls looked like. The scratch-coat plaster tells us there was beadboard or some other type of wainscoting on the lower part of the walls. 6. Tongue-and-groove flooring inside the wall. No clue why. (Please ignore my uniform shirt hanging on the door.) To the left of the door, that little strip that looks like tile is actually printed cardboard. Kinda cool. 7. Shutter hinge on a scrap piece of exterior trim. This part of the room was originally a little back porch; I'm guessing when they closed it in they reused some lumber. 8. I don't know the correct term for this but I'm calling it lathe board. It's one piece of grooved board instead of several lathe strips. The plaster is on the other side of it but there's no plaster keys squinched through because there aren't any gaps in the board. #oldhouse #oldhouselove #househistory #vintagewallpaper #oldhousenerd

I was talking to our neighbor that was born in Besalu about our house. I was wondering about the filled in space above the front door. He mentioned that it had a statue that was a shrine to Sant Ferriol. The same saint that our spring up the mountain is named after. He also mentioned that the fallen keystones in our door are from the earthquake in the 1450’s. There was a house standing here since sometime in the 1200’s, but it collapsed and the walls separated allowing the two stones to fall. The house was rebuilt sometime in the 1500’s and has been added onto and amended ever since. #mascostabesalu #househistory
