Do you practice handstands but never seem to catch much hang time? Try changing your shape! In this video I explain why some handstands may be easier than others for you. Watch and find out! . . ❤Thank you to @al_cali_yogi and @k.e.o.w.i for all the handstand and yoga discussions that helped inspire this post!❤ . . KEY POINTS 1. Shoulder and upper back flexibility play a large role in the handstand shapes you can make. 2. People with open (more flexible) shoulders and upper back will have more choice in the shapes they make. 3. With tight or closed shoulders it will be difficult to get your arms in line with your ears in what is called the "open" position. Instead, your shoulders will be in a closed position, more in front of your chest. The easiest shape for you will be one where one or both feet or legs hang over your head and offset the weight imbalance caused by the shoulder angle. 4. People with more open shoulders may find the tuck position where butt sticks out the easiest. The weight is distributed evenly over the hands (critical to balance) and weight is relatively close to hands compared to a straight legged handstand. This will make balance easier since you'll have more resistance to small changes in balance. 5. The more you practice handstands, the more your shoulders and back will open naturally. The other day I’ve published a story that showed how I’m falling from a handstand to a wheel pose and I got so much questions about it. So I was able to find this old video from 2017- I was really afraid to fall to a wheel pose so I did it slowly with the wall, I wanted my mind and body to understand the movement. It didn’t happen two months later, but it did happen about a year after. I know you see me now and everything looks so simple and smooth, but I really started my journey with zero experience, and slowly taught myself how to do things. And for another question I get often- I did go to yoga classes, I had an excellent teacher there that taught me all the basics. And once I had that I started practicing at home and tried things on my own.
