Just wrapped up this pole mural that was made possible by PSE’s ARTility project!
Although I clearly have my own draw to murals, it is incredibly powerful to gauge just how many people are positively affected by public art. ✨
I have a deep appreciation for everyone who has shared positive words about projects like this. I am seriously fueled by the comments and interactions I made throughout this process from the countless people who have let me know how much they value public art integrated within their communities.
Most importantly, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to those who are permitting, inspiring and funding public art projects. Let’s keep the ball rolling!
Tassie is often considered pretty ass-backwards, but DID YOU KNOW that it was one of the first places in the world to build hydroelectric stations? (of course you don’t, why on earth would you). That’s pretty nuts given the inaccessibility and inhospitability of the terrain, and the fact that the tiny island was colonised largely by convict thugs. The UK claims the mantle of the world’s first hydro power station built in 1878, but Tassie was quick to punch well above its weight by building a small plant to service the west coast Mount Bischoff tin mine just 3 years later. And DID YOU ALSO KNOW that the massive pipes plummeting off Tassie hillsides were originally constructed from wood? Steel was scarce during the war so the penstocks were handbuilt from local and imported timber.
I tootled across this pipe near the Lower Lake Margaret mini-hydro station. Naturally I assumed it was a massive snack storage vat or something, but it turns out these woodstave pipelines transported water downhill from the dams to the power plants and were good up to 200psi. What’s even crazier is that this particular King-Yolande power complex still uses a 2.2km timber pipeline today. The native King Billy Pine pipeline was in service for for nearly 70 years after replacing the original Oregon Pine pipeline (timber imported from Canada via Strahan) which rapidly deteriorated cos Tassie is a bit feral and doesn’t take kindly to outsiders. The pipeline in use today is built from Alaskan Yellow Cedar. I know nothing about timber so I’m not sure if this section of pipe is a discarded length of the 2009 cedar replacement, or part of the original pine pipeline (1938). Whatever it is, it’s pretty fucking cool. So next time you go to rag on Tassie for being a colony of inbred criminals, remember the visionary engineering miracle that is the Tasmanian hydroelectric scheme. DON’T FORGET. WRITE IT DOWN. ⚙️ #themoreyouknow

(But yeah, still mostly inbred criminals)
Staff at work! ♂️
