IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Light blue background reads "April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), an annual campaign to raise public awareness about sexual assault and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. This year’s theme—"I Ask"—champions the message that asking for consent is a healthy, normal, and necessary part of everyday interactions. Join It's On Us and students across the country in committing to play an active role in combatting sexual assault on campuses and in communities nationwide.” The word April is in large white lettering at the top while the rest of the writing is in smaller black text below it. The It’s On Us logo is in the top right corner in white. At the bottom in white is the hashtag It’s On Us and the link It’s On Us dot org slash pledge.
Are hands-on assists a part of your teaching? If so, remember we all carry our past and present with us - confirming consent in any situation, including with respect to hands-on assists, empowers both parties to feel safer and more confident in their interactions. Consider using assist chips or checking in with students verbally (or better yet, do both!) to inform them that while you offer hands-on assists, they always have the right to say no. Thanks to our friends at @NSVRC for sharing ways to normalize the discussion around consent during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
