A piece from this series been shown at the British Museum, while others have achieved £577k at auction. As believers we must be aware of the subtle shift that can happen in which our eyes get off of Christ & we begin to find our identity in preachers. The biggest mistake when it comes to spotting idolatry is thinking that we cannot idolize good things. In fact, everything that man idolizes is something that is perceived to be good. Idolatry is loosely defined as anything that takes the place of God in providing security, significance, satisfaction or identity that can only be provided by Jesus Christ. With that definition, we can start idolizing good things, too...work, relationships, & even our pastors. Nevertheless, the pastor, regardless how successful he might be at fulfilling (2 Tim 4:5) his God-ordained role at the local church level, & perhaps even beyond, is still only a man &, as such, a sinner (Rom 3:23) despite the degree of accomplishments he may have, by God’s grace (Jn 15:5), achieved while ministering to a local body of believers. Earthly shepherds are chosen by Chief Shepherd as ministers of the mysteries of God. (1 Cor 4:1) They have been placed in our lives to watch over our souls, & to preach the Word of the Lord in Spirit & in Truth. Many err when it comes to esteeming their Pastors is the esteem turns into idolatry.  Many depend on their Pastors for the full sustenance of their spiritual walk. For lack of better term, they have become spiritually co-dependent on their Pastor & hold him as the standard of truth. This was never meant to be. If it is, we are in danger of putting a man on a pedestal he was never meant to be on. WHERE IS YOUR FOUNDATION? The challenge I would present you, as well as myself, is to make sure you are grounded in the truth of the Bible & your foundation is Christ. Christ is the solid Rock. Your Pastor is not. The man that stands before you and your congregation each Sunday, hopefully faithfully proclaiming the Word of the Lord is to help build on top of that foundation. He is not the foundation himself.
