"The Sopranos" premiered 20 years ago tonight, on HBO. The iconic opening sequence captures glimpses of New Jersey roadside Americana as Tony Soprano drives by. The final episode ends with a Soprano family dinner at Holsten's in Bloomfield — and that famously ambiguous cut to black. I present three shots (not those kinds of shots!) of Tony Soprano's New Jersey. First up is Pizza Land in North Arlington, which I photographed one cold night in March 2014 — we see this pizza shop in the famous open. The second image, also from March 2014, is the "muffler man" from Wilson's Carpet in Jersey City, another icon Tony zooms by. Of course, the giant is holding a carpet, not a muffler. Finally, this past August, I visited Holsten's for a delicious vanilla shake. I did not sit in the Soprano booth — I figured why tempt fate. #retrologist #sopranos

This Burger King in Pennsville, New Jersey is truly fit for royalty! The one-of-a-kind franchise is shaped like a castle! Inside the castle is a playroom outfitted with kitschy regal adornments. A more traditional 1970s-style Burger King structure is attached to the castle. But the best part is the logo on the outside of the castle (swipe to the third photo). It features the “square” 1970s Burger King logo with the words “Kids Club” squeezed in. Any variation of this iconic logo is incredibly rare to find in the wild. BK has done an effective job of vanquishing this logo from the land, replacing it with the “round swirl” from 1997, though something tells me, like the creepy “king” head that occasionally surfaces in ads and nightmares, the square logo will be selectively deployed for nostalgic purposes, as we saw in this year’s Super Bowl commercial featuring Andy Warhol. I’ll have another one of these BK discoveries soon — I’ll be scouting it this weekend. #retrologist
