*PROGRESS UPDATE we will be getting 'fingers crossed' the keys in approx 4 weeks to start the fit out! We will be working hard to get the space planned out beforehand! Thank you to all the volunteers that have come forward so far, we are working through the list to reply back to you! Apologies for the delay, we appreciate your help so much! * >>>> Exciting News <<<<
We are in the final stages of negotiations for our second premises in... Bournville!!! Exact location to be announced when we get the keys ekkk!!
Our second project has been made possible soley through the funding we received from winning the FedEx small business grant award and all of our own personal lifetime savings; so we need all the help we can get!
In order to ensure our plastic free product range is just as good (if not better) than our Digbeth store we have to invest in a large number of high-cost dispensers and equipment!
We operate as a social enterprise and so we need as much help as possible during our rent free period to open in time!
We would love to have help with a whole range of jobs from painting and signage to carpentry, metal work, and labelling etc.
If you or someone you know will be able to help, either volunteering or professionally, please email us at contact@thecleankilo.co.uk or direct message on social media.
Final request - we are firm believers of REUSE and as with our current shop, we would like to aim for 90% of the shop to be upcycled! If you know anyone getting rid of old floorboards, doors, scaffold boards, fridges etc, please get in touch! Or if you have a van for us to borrow/hire to collect the above!
Thanks so much for all your support; we are so excited to be given the opportunity to expand zero waste shopping in our community!
Please share our message!

Zero waste shopping in supermarket chains -
Yay or Nay?!?
We've been to check out the zero waste section that @waitroseandpartners is offering and overall we were quite impressed!
How does it 'weigh' up though?
Pro's: Offering plastic-free shopping so more people can help reduce plastic pollution. If the scheme is successful other supermarket chains are likely to follow!
Supermarkets promoting zero waste shopping to the mainstream and to reuse containers. It will no longer be seen as a 'hippy/hipster' if it becomes the norm, therefore popularising the concept!
Supermarkets can bulk buy across their thousands of stores, therefore their prices can be competitive!
Supermarkets have the ability to shake up the supply system as they have the power to demand less packaging from their suppliers!
Plastic free options could increase faster due to above point!
People that may not have ever stepped foot in a zero waste shop, might decide to pick up some plastic free items!
Con's:
If it rolls out across the country, it could be damaging to the 200 independent zero waste shops like ours across the UK. These are the people that left their jobs to help the environment before supermarkets were pressured to. The buying power of an independent shop is minute compared to a chain, so everything we buy generally costs us more. This is why indies either make less money or cost more! Corps may be operating 'green' in one area of business but when you support a small zero waste shop, you know that your money will be supporting other great things such as awareness in the community, eco projects and all the other things shop owners do in their ‘spare’ time! Less of the money you spend remains in the local economy. We buy local as possible. You don't get the one to one, interactive experience a small shop can give! Cheaper food - but at whose cost? Health, environment or producer?
The trial will continue for 3 weeks and then they will decide whether it will be rolled out!
@morrisons have also trialled out dispensers in their Leeds branch earlier this year and there are talks of @sainsburys following suit... So what do we all think
This past weekend probably my favourite couple of days I’ve had in absolute ages. @paperdollshandmade market on Saturday, followed by an amazing @independentbirmingham festival on Sunday that left me feeling even more smitten with this city (and all the wonderful people that come with it). #brumpunk and proud of it ✊
Later posting my bright bake for today as I foolishly thought I saw a patch of blue in the grey sky...

I was wrong, so here you go - have a Roarsome afternoon!
