Vincent Van Gogh uses the two figures in the middle ground as markers for the monumental size of the industry before them. This composition stems from a tradition in which miniature subjects look upon the awesome power of nature. Living at the top of the hill in Montmartre, he would have been able to see the Clichy factories from afar. He travelled to see these factories up close, resulting in this overwhelming view. Because factories were frequently built in suburbs on land previously used for agriculture, they often sprang up among open fields.
