We need to guard our empathy so carefully. ✨ . It’s devastatingly easy to believe that because we feel their pain we should help them fix it. It’s the kind thing to do, isn’t it? (That’s a rhetorical question. It is indeed the kind thing, but . . .) . People radiating unhappiness are often doing so because they’re not able or currently willing to take responsibility for their own emotional state. This seems like a harsh line to put out there, even to me, and maybe it is, but that doesn’t make it any less true. . Empaths have an extraordinary amount of what are called mirror neurons in our brains. They do exactly what they sound like; we immediately (instinctively) absorb, mirror and reflect back to someone whatever they’re putting out there. . Ever notice how good you feel as an empath after spending time with a relentlessly optimistic person? In particular, how safe it f e e l s to be around someone who is polite and well put-together and exercising active awareness of the imprint they’re making on their surroundings, including you? . The truth is it feels so good to be around those people because like attracts like. We appreciate mindfulness, so we’re mindful. We long to be seen and shown kindness, so we make eye contact and say good morning; we watch our tone, the way we speak, look and move. . Most people around us are not like this, though. Beam your light, but be aware that if you’re feeling hostility or dismissal or devastation (or whatever) from someone, their pain is spreading into you like an ink stain. . You’re not choosing it. It’s atavistic; we can’t help that it happens. . Even the kind act of sitting with someone in pain incites an energy transfer like a siphoning off. They walk away feeling lighter because we’re carrying their darkness now. . Beautiful soul, that’s not your job. Be careful.
