[The Godfather] (1972) Dir. Francis Ford Coppola; DP: Gordon Willis (Swipe & Sound on)
____
Yes, we know that [The Godfather] is a classic and with good reason because of scenes like this right here. Michael Corleone (#AlPacino) has spent the entirety of the film resisting the nature of the family business. And that’s why it is so fitting that a traditional Italian baptism in a church is a perfect vehicle to show his own rebirth into a crime boss. As Michael stands at the church altar as his nephew Michael Francis’ godfather he has to answer a series of questions relating to faith and his belief in Christ while renouncing Satan. The setup of the scene with the traditional organ music in the background is perfect as the priest switches between Latin and English prayers. As the priest begins to ask Michael about his spirituality, the organ music becomes more ominous as the scene switches between the calm in the church and the setup of the hits by Michael’s men. The chaotic music (at times punctuated with sounds of a crying baby) abruptly ends as the priest asks Michael poignantly, “Michael Francis Rizzi, do you renounce Satan?” and that brief pause before the carnage begins is perfection. When Michael answers for his nephew, he says, “I do renounce him.”- which speaks volumes that he is the voice of an innocent baby while his own innocence is shattered. This scene is so wonderfully edited with parallel cross-cutting that reverts back to Michael after each hit that he has ordered in his family’s name is fulfilled. By the end of the scene, the priest ends with a blessing and not only is Michael the holy godfather of the baby but the actual Godfather of the Corleone crime family. Mic drop. What do you think of this scene and [The Godfather]?

[A Quiet Place] (2018) Dir. John Krasinski “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young (Swipe & Sound on)
____
Director John Krasinski really knocked this musical moment out of the park. For the first twenty minutes of [A Quiet Place] we are quite literally in “a quiet place”, completely engrossed in the silent world on the screen. The characters in the film communicate mostly through sign language and we learn very early in the film what exactly happens when any sound is made. Side note: it’s not good. People are hunted by gnarly creatures through the use of sound. As a result, any particular sound or lack of sound is very intentional in this portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world. That’s why by the time we get to this very intimate moment between husband and wife - this musical moment is perfection. Most of the time, what we listen to through headphones is already a personal experience. So when Evelyn (#EmilyBlunt) shares one side of her earbuds with her husband Lee (#JohnKrasinski) she’s bringing him (and the audience) into her world. When the song is at full volume we become a part of their love and understand both characters a bit more. Also, “Harvest Moon” is a beautiful song and completely fitting for this scene. Apparently, John Krasinski was adamant about having this song in the movie even though the price was outside of their budget but he knew that it would be perfect for this scene and he was right. What do you think of this musical moment? Let me know in the comments below.
