IM Pei (102 today! Happy Birthday!), Des Moines Arts Centre Addition (1966-68) Des Moines, Iowa
Picture on Fujichrome from 1989.
The middle child of three different wings of this terrific set of galleries that houses quite a decent collection of artworks. Eliel Saarinen was responsible for the original gallery, completed in 1948, whilst Richard Meier (recently disgraced in the #metoo movement, which is a shame since his work is very good) built the last wing in 1985. Together it’s remarkable essay in the history of post-war American Modernism. @duncan.gibbs 1989.

We’re joining our friends at @pjglasshouse and @savingplaces to celebrate the centennial of the Bauhaus and its legacy in America!
Over the past 100 years, the world has been shaped by the design philosophies of the Bauhaus School in Germany. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, architect of the Farnsworth House, was one of its most influential instructors and served as the final director of the formal institution.
After being pushed out of Germany by the Nazis, Mies was one of the key figures who brought the school’s International Style to American institutional and commercial buildings. His focus on steel frames interspersed with glass walls, unobstructed interior flow, and the marriage of the exterior landscape with the interior design redefined the cityscapes of the United States.
These same elements were key in his design of Edith Farnsworth’s weekend retreat—a structure that simultaneously embraces the school’s philosophies and subverts them to show a style unique to Mies.
Farnsworth House is held as a Historic Site by @savingplaces and the regular tour schedule begins tomorrow! Visit the link in bio for information on guided tours and the new Bauhaus-Archiv photography exhibition installed in the Barnsworth Gallery!: Jon Miller/Hedrich Blessing (1,9); Greg Freund (2); Farnsworth House (3,6); LPCI (4,7); Lee Mindel (8).
