The collage of double ikat sarees that I have displayed for the past few days as a part of sachipar series. The sarees have a same anchal and border with different patterns of checks and their placement in the body . This differential placement gives these sarees different names . SACHIPAR- Body with minute checks and a contrast colour border and Anchal . VIJAYAPAR- addition of one layer of red lahari bandha or wave like band to the border with same body and border pattern . Size of checks may vary . PATNAIKPAR- One additional band in the middle where a row of animal motifs is sandwiched by lahari bandha or wave like bands in both sides changes the Vijayapar to patnaikpar. Red and black compose the middle band always . SAKTAPAR- substitution of the checks by big dice board pattern on both side of the middle band changes the name of the saree to saktapar. The last one which is missing here is a BICHITRAPAR where the broad dice like boards are substituted by transverse bands with butis creating a very beautiful design. A Berhampuri silk with a traditional design anchal and multi coloured temple border. A recent acquisition from @utkalamrita . This saree is a combination of ikat with extra warp and weft design. A fabric is woven by interplaxement of two series of threads which are perpendicular to each other . These plain fabrics can be adorned by different ornamentation like change of colour, thread, change of count and denting and insertion of extra warp and weft. The word extra itself indicates its nature of design that is if these extra threads are removed it does not affect the ground plain weave. It is a very common and prevalent design in weaves of Odisha. Berhampuri sarees though famous for temple border also carry extra weft and warp work in anchal and body. I fell for the multi coloured tie and dye temple border of this saree and the traditional pattern of the anchal. Thank you @utkalamrita for reviving the anchal pattern . I saw the picture of this design in a book on Odisha handlooms published by Directorate of Textiles Govt Of Odisha wayback in 1999 and it got printed in my mind . It was a day at the construction site of upcoming Bhubaneswar city festival .
