Enseñándole a mis rebeldes dedos gordos a estar juntos!!!
Thanks @zeynstuff for the #inspiration

“Suspended in time...surrendered to the moment, completely supported and utterly at peace.” @bobby_clennell on teaching #bhishmasana (bed of arrows pose) Check out her wonderful blog sharing the story of Bhishma and the benefits of the pose, which is not typically done like this but practiced as a savasana with several bricks resting across the back body from head to foot. www.bobbyclennell.wordpress.com
I saw this delightful variation using the trestle prop from Floripa yogi Carla @solar_iyengar_yoga
Next time I’ll try with my head a little lower (thanks Bobby for the tip) also I would like to experiment with two belts for the back of the wrists to rest and float.

If in my teaching I have somehow helped to promote the use of props as a main feature of Iyengar Yoga then I have not done my job well. If people in my classes walk away with the understanding this style of yoga is focused on, or sometimes obsessed with, or just consistently including props as a means to practice, then it is my lack of skillset in showing and sharing the use of props for practice.
In my training I remember an illuminating moment when I came to learn that props are not for beginners! The use of props should enhance a practitioner’s awareness of an asana or movement and not necessarily make the pose easier. It may sometimes in fact ask the person to work harder making the use of a prop more challenging. And other times it may be the case that a prop is added to make an asana more accessible and/or endurable. It could also be the case for neither intending to make the pose easier nor harder, but rather more interesting. To add a different tone, to change the mood or quality of mind within the structure of the asana, which otherwise may never be felt in the asana standalone.
If students come to my class and the first thing I ask them is to gather props and shuffle about their prop arrangements then I have taken them out of their body and asked them to interact with external objects. The analytical brain is turned on.
When I use a prop I don’t feel it is a crutch or a cheat, or that somehow it is a step closer to one day achieving the “full pose” prop-free. Sure it can be taught with this intention and that’s all good too. But I enjoying propa-fying poses as an experience in itself. My body and the prop are not separate. The prop should feel like an extension of body-consciousness, not external of it, if used PROPerly.
Enjoy this video of practicing Eka Hasta Bhujasana with belt and bricks to learn the actions of engagement and passivity in holding the arm balance.
