Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797-1888) the First Emperor of the German Empire on his deathbed on 9th March 1888. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Born In 1797, young Wilhelm trained in the Prussian Army to fight against Napoleon and his French Army at the age of 16 in the Napoleonic Wars. Wilhelm from an early age was prepared to become the next emperor. That time came in 1861 when he was crowned King Of Prussia. Otto Von Bismarck triggered the wars against Denmark, Austria and finally France in 1871 to form the new German Empire under the leadership of Kaiser Wilhelm I. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Perhaps the most famous thing about the Kaiser was his Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck. He and the Emperor worked together to strengthen the empire and avoid conflict between Liberals and Conservatives within the Government. . Kaiser Wilhelm I died on the 9th March 1888 in Berlin after an illness. He was a very popular leader at the time and many statues and monuments have been named in honour of him. However he survived many assassination attempts such as one in 1883 when a group of Anarchists tried to kill him with dynamite which failed due to the rain. . Judging by the uniform and the equipment this is definitely late war, I would say 1917/18. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If we look carefully this soldier has been highly decorated. He has been awarded the Iron Cross 1st class and the Prussian Pour Le Merite medal which was the highest ever medal to be awarded for the German Armed Forces during World War One. . The helmet is an M17 and if you look carefully he has a M16 gas mask with Feldstecher (binoculars) on his chest. He also appears to be wearing a officers belt buckle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, he is definitely a officer due to the collar. However, he could be an Artillery observer who coordinates artillery for tanks specifically for hitting enemy tanks. He may be even a messanger. However, I don't think he is a stormtrooper because he is quite old. He has been most likely posted to the Western Front. . The soldiers in this illustration are seen wearing camouflaged helmets. But how accurate is this? Did the imperial German army actually use these helmets? Well the answer is no for the first years of the war. From 1914 until early 1918, helmets were camouflaged with a single color. The most cost effective camo method was putting dirt on the helmet, to cover the shiny surface. On the 7th of July 1918, General Ludendorff himself called for helmets to be painted with a camouflage pattern. The use of pattern of different colors was encouraged, because it made it harder to recognize a helmet through its shape. A multi color pattern makes it harder to tell where the helmet begins and ends. Now, a good amount of units undergoing a refit were equipped with the new camouflaged helmet, but the absolute majority of German troops would carry the standard single color helmet till the end of the war. Multiple pictures exist proving that the new helmets were worn especially by stormtroopers. So, while it's true that the imperial army made use of these multi color pattern helmets, their number is largely inflated. A lot of collectors are likely to have a forged helmet on their shelf. A reason for this is that in the early post-war years, standard German steel helmets were overpainted with the new color pattern and then sold as war trophies. Private Walter William Flanders (1895-1914) of the Regiment number 2426 of E Company 1st Battalion. Part of the Hertfordshire Regiment. . Walter and three other older men were killed in action when their trench took a direct hit, burying an entire section near Shrewsbury Forest near Zillebeke, Belgium on the 19th November 1914 very early in the war. . Walter had only arrived on the Western Front on 5th November and had been in the front lines for less than 48 hours. He was just 19 years old. He has no known grave however his name is recorded on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium. . Walter was born in 1895 and was killed in 1914. . Brother of Mrs. Agnes J. Large who lived on 4, Ridge Road., Letchworth, Hertfordshire, England. .
