Three years ago Maria planted a tree in the red earth of the Njiapanda village near Karatu. She was only five but the assistant chief of the village, Paulo, made her promise to come back someday and see the shade that the tree would provide for the children she had played with that day. . She kept her promise. Today we returned to the village to see the tree (middle photo) and the people from that wonderful rainy day in 2016. Our friend @saidkambelenje had arranged for Maria, now eight, to meet the village chairman and assistant chairman, elders, and schoolteachers. When we arrived, they had more holes dug and waiting for us, so we planted more trees. . Again today, Maria promised she would return and see the trees and the Iraqw people in Njiapanda.
