The Sony WM-1 is a deceptively named product. Contrary to the model number it is actually Sony's 3rd walkman (or 2nd, since they were released around the same time). They started off with the TPS-L2, and "Walkman" is just a marketing name. Sony themselves are even quite skeptical on the appeal of that name, but they were proven wrong. It was a major hit, and they soon started a product line, the Sony Walkman series with the WM-prefix. They re-released the TPS-L2 as a top-of-the-line all-metal model: the WM-3 and developed a new and ground-breaking model: the WM-2. A top quality unit, albeit covered in a plastic body, placing it in the middle of the range. All that's left is to fill the 1st tier slot with a rather budget model, and the WM-1 was born. Design-wise, the WM-1 was based on older Sony mono tape recorders, resulting in a very large body with a thick and robust plastic chassis. You can still see the massive cavity normally reserved for a speaker, just above the batteries. Visually, though, you can see that it has been styled to rather match the now iconic design of the WM-2. The Black sides and angled planes, along with the special screw for the volume knob. Service tips! These older models are generally very robust units that are built to last, but it does have an achilles heel. A common problem with units using the same basic mechanism (larger TCS/TCM models like the 121, 310, 300, 350, etc), is that the FF/REW function does not work.
