Almost one year ago I designed something I am particularly proud of. I had always thought of circular yoke as the traditional stranded sweater, which I like of course, but doesn’t fit my taste and style so much. Then I saw the stunning #kirigamisweater by @gudrunjohnston, and I suddenly realized how circular yoke might in fact translate in a modern, stylish design. I immediately knew that I would have loved to be able to design something so beautiful, with a similar tridimensional effect and a similar clean and elegant motif. We, designers, always are influenced by each other, and I will not deny that I owe my original inspiration to @gudrunjohnston . This is the origin of Modern Art sweater, one of my most beloved design, included in the gorgeous book The Art of Circular Yokes from @interweavecraft and curated by @kabsconcepts, that will be available by the end of May (preorders are already opened in Amazon). On top of everything, the yarn I used is once again from my dear friend Valentina @snailyarn (I used her Baby Alpaca Merino Dk in Parchment), and that makes me happy twice. If you missed the beautiful designs already uploaded in @hi.ravelry, featured in the book, you better have a look. @woodhouseknits, @amyyounggunderson, @jenisehopeknits are only some of the designers who contributed to this stunning collections. Lotusland Cardigan is now available! This bottom up cardigan is worked flat and seamed, with set in sleeves, a textured lace back and twisted rib for the hems. It is available on my website and on Ravelry, and quite frankly I hope you heart the hell outta it; because releasing this was hard, and a long journey but I made it. Being the model for a pattern is so... fraught... it's hard to look at the photos objectively when all I can see is what I've felt badly about for so many years. That inner voice is so critical, and she repeats everything that ever hurt me over and over again. I remember what that kid in 8th grade used to say, I remember what the husband of my mom's friend said when we were camping, I remember those boys at the lake, I remember them all. But this week I forced myself to be the model, to edit the photos with a critical eye that was not looking at 'me' but looking at the garment I designed. This one's for all the women like me who want to look badass in a candy colored cardigan, with rad design elements and realistic sizes. This one's for all the magazines that think bust circ 48" is plus size, for all the times we've been told to wear 'black' and those freaking tummy slimmer things too. May is also #mentalhealthawarenessmonth . Mental health is something I’ve only in the last 3 years been working on. I did not talk about things, I did not know how to properly voice what is wrong, and I did not seek help. Having emotions has always been a bad thing growing up in a Chinese household. When I acted a certain way, it was always explained as me being irrational but never actually understanding what was wrong with me. When I got really depressed, I was told I was just being moody and to get over it. Mental health was never important or understood. Seeking outside help from family and friends is important. Having family and friends as your support system is also important. There is still a huge stigma around mental illnesses especially in racial or ethnical minorities. Suicide is still seen as a “white people thing”. This problematic statement forces minority groups to not seek help and resources are limited when your own people do not even believe in mental illness as a problem. It’s important to seek help when you feel something is wrong and to understand that mental health is as important to maintain as your physical health is. Understand you are not alone and seek professional help when you are ready. I personally still have a lot to work on but we have to #breakthestigma . . .
