alright, sweet peas, it’s officially back - the #creativecoven online shawl design course is back with updated and bonus content! since i first launched my online course last year, i quit my full-time job, started a part-time job, quit that job, and have gone 100% self-employed in my biz without taking extra non-biz contracts like i was anticipating i would need to. i’ve also released an additional 57 patterns since the course companions “peony” and “loam” were released, published a second book, launched #everydaymagic and @fromfieldtoskin, and brought home a fur baby. basically, life looks a hell of a lot different than it did last spring. which means i have more experience to draw on as a teacher, and you have more access to the weird variations this knit design life can take ‍♀️ all current and new students will receive $20 off for my online store through monday, which covers the cost of a swatch ruler or a good chunk of a project bag, but first i recommend reading through the link in my profile to see if this is the right learning experience for you. dm me any questions you have and swipe through to see some of the shawls i’ve knit since #creativecoven first launched! ✨

Hi there, to my new followers and those who’ve been here a while! I don’t show my face here often because I figure what I’m designing or making is far more interesting, right? But since I enjoy seeing your faces I suppose it’s ok to show mine occasionally too. I also thought it might be a good time for a brief introduction. . In a nutshell, I design knitting patterns that I sell primarily on Ravelry and LoveKnitting as PDF downloads. I’ve been designing for 9 years, and knitting since I was a small child. I absolutely love designing patterns and immersing myself in the numbers and layout details! . I love sweaters so that’s mostly what I design, although you’ll find the occasional accessory as well. It’s important to me that my patterns are accessible, and by that I mean available for anyone to purchase from anywhere, and also possible for most knitters with basic knitting skills to follow. I strive to make them as clear, complete and concise as possible. (But if you ever need help, please post your question in my Ravelry group and you will most likely get a reply within 24 hours.) . My patterns typically result in pretty understated items of clothing that are nevertheless original and often contain unusual details or shaping. At the same time, they are (I think) logical and interesting to knit. It’s always exciting for me to see how you make them your own with your choice of yarn and colour! . I live in Calgary, Canada, and last year I retired from my other non-knitting related job so now I am able to spend more time in California (for the weather ) and Kimberley BC (because my Dad lives there and the x-c skiing is ). I’ve also recently taken up sewing again, mostly for my own enjoyment and to allow me to create clothes that suit this new chapter of my life. Since I don’t have to show up daily at an office job and have more time for making, I’m excited to reinvent my wardrobe! I’ve started sharing some of that here alongside my knitting designs. . Thank you for reading this far. I’d love if you introduced yourself in a comment and told me what you love about knitting or making too! . #flextee

Combining Days 1 & 2 for the #fiberuarychallenge because I let last night be a self care night full of face care, nail painting, and hot chocolate ⠀ ⠀ Day 1:⠀ Hi! My Name is Katryn. I first began to learn to crochet and knit about 16 or 17 years ago. A lovely aunt taught me how to crochet, and a babysitter taught me how to knit! As I was a youthling, I only made things on occasion as gifts. I then made a lot of hats and scarves to donate to shelters while I was in High School. This foundation really set up for the spark to light once I went to college for fashion design. Freshman year, I saw the knitting machine studio, fell in love, and signed up for classes for the next year. I learned how to machine knitting and program a machine that is used within the sweater and knitwear industry (Stoll ADF to be specific) while also honing in my hand knitting skills. For my BFA thesis I then designed and made an entire knitwear collection. It was spectacular. Knowing that access to that information and technology would be slim post graduation, I designed everything to learn as many techniques as I could, while also supporting my sustainability driven thesis topic. Now I work in the apparel industry as an assistant sleepwear designer and I knit every single moment that I am able! I hope to get back to my love of sweater design and publish at least one (hopefully more!) pattern this year.⠀ ⠀ Day 2:⠀ When I’m not knitting I’m drinking some sort of beverage, because I haven’t honed the ability to knit with one hand yet . Seriously, I have an obsession with different forms of hydration and liquid energy. I always have to have some sort of drink with me. I can help you choose what to order at a coffee shop, tea shop, smoothie place, etc. based on what you are feeling, because I have become a professional at knowing what I really want to drink at any point in time. Now, please excuse me while I go make myself a cold brew coffee with hibiscus ginger simple syrup and a little bit of cream.

I finished a thing! One extra chunky, not too Christmassy, Christmas sweater, knit from scratch with no actual pattern, to prove to myself that i have understood the principles (and maths) of designing a seamless, bottom up raglan sweater. And it fits!! (I will try and get a "modelled" shot at some point) . . . It's not perfect. I made mistakes and i learned a few lessons such as : • waist shaping is not easy to place right when you knit bottom up and more to the point, when knitting with very chunky yarn. There are simply not enough rows for a nice curve. @katedaviesdesigns got it spot on with the fab back shaping on her Owls sweater. So for chunky sweaters shaping at the back rather than side I think! • 4 stitch floats are fine when using thinner yarns but when 4 sts measure 3cm the floats take on a life of their own, grabbing at anything that passes! I'll just have to make sure I remove any jewellery before I put it on! •Ease is everything. I wanted a sweater that fitted not floated (bloated!) and it does. Perfectly. But I can't push up the sleeves very well, and that's something i do. A lot. So must remember to add a bit more ease at the wrist in future... •and finally - yarn choice. I had this in stash and love this yarn very much. It's @dropsdesign alpaca/wool blend Andes and it is soooooo soft and warm. Maybe a tad too soft and warm... and heavy. I know alpaca has a tendancy to lengthen. I hope it doesn't stretch too much... . . . I don't have any plans to release this particular sweater as a pattern but now I've got a better understanding of the construction (and thank you @arohaknits for the garment construction module in Swatch Studio for making it all a little simpler to understand) I feel much more confident about moving forward into garment design. . . . #knittersofig #knitdesignersofinstagram #knittersstaywarm #knittingaddict #winterknits #knittingismyyoga #loveeverystitch #createeveryday #everydayknitter #imarealknitter #swatchstudio #learnsomethingnew #everydaysaschoolday #knittingaddict #knittersgonnaknit #ukknitters

I accidentally matched my knitting on Sunday. I am taking this as a sign that I am working on something spectacular! Hopefully, at least half as spectacular as the biscuits and honey butter at @kickapoocoffeemke...⠀ .⠀ What are you working on this week? I’m on a project ideas kick and would love to see some fun patterns!
