I finally () got a chance to write a thing for the Atlantic on Rihanna's new Fenty luxury line and the ways she's incorporated @kwamebphoto's photography and the history of the #BlackIsBeautiful movement. My goal was not only to celebrate the creative synergy between the two Bajan visionaries but also to name the immediate and long-term *implications* of Rihanna's decision to situate Fenty w/in a black diasporic style genealogy. Which also allowed me to talk about cultural appropriation in fashion and the marginalization (and outright exclusion) of black designers and tastemakers in the luxury market. Bottom line: Bad Gyal Rih is a baddass!! ➡️LINK IN BIO!!⬅️

When RIHANNA says, in Vogue magazine, that she read your work to flesh out the inspiration for her new Fenty luxury fashion line!!!!!!! OMG!!!! I am blown away . I had no idea when I started writing about Kwame Brathwaite & the Grandassa models as a grad student that one day Rihanna would be citing this black woman! I'm just honored that the Braithwaite family trusted me to tell Kwame Brathwaite's story. Gimme a minute, and I'll pull myself together....maybe not, lol! Wow. Humbled for real.

"Another photograph, dated 1968, shows Grandassa Models at the Renaissance Casino Ballroom in Harlem on Garvey Day. In the background, a poster reads “Buy Black”. As soon as she began looking into in, Rihanna wanted to know more – cue more “digging” to turn up the fact, via writer and historian Tanisha C. Ford, that the Grandassa Models designed and made their own clothes. Aside from looking incredible, their radical reclaiming of African inspiration, elegant robes, headwraps and jewelry led to a wave of female entrepreneurship, creating self-owned boutiques and a whole community of black designers, stylists, hairdressers and makeup artists." •

Thank you @skirball_la for inviting me to a private screening and tour of the new exhibit "Black is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite". I left extremely inspired by the beautiful photos of Black women showcasing their natural hair and clothes that reclaim African roots. As an artist Kwame's work really resonated with me. I appreciate his determination to challenge beauty standards and use art to propel equity. Check out this exhibition if you have the chance. #kwamebrathwaite #skirball #blackisbeautiful #AtTheSkirball
