My six sweet raccoons. Mimi is the lighter colored, twitchy one on her back. And to the left is tiny little Etta (she's almost butt to butt to Mimi). When she curls up next to her nap buddy, you can see just how tiny Etta is compared to the others. Etta ate much better at her 9PM feeding, and almost as good at her 1AM feeding (which is when I took this). They'll all be getting breakfast shortly, and then they won't get to eat again until around 4:30. This is where people start calling me crazy. Meet Etta (short for Musetta) and Mimi. The rehabber who has had them had already picked Mimi's name, and it's perfect for her! I chose Etta because my husband and I actually saw La Boheme Saturday night, and these are the names of the female leads. La Boheme is my favorite opera, so it's to be expected I would have some babies named after some of the characters. I used to be an opera singer back in the day. It's funny how one passion ebbs while the other flows. So yes, we now have SIX raccoons. And more animals likely to come! Mimi is older than the Mystery Inc gang, and Musetta is younger and MUCH smaller. She's also being a finicky eater. Hopefully Etta and I will get used to reach other and her appetite will pick up. I've been a little worried about Mimi and Etta for a few days now. Mimi has been bloated/swollen since before she got to her first rehabber, and we haven't had luck getting it to go down. Etta has been gaining weight, but not at the pace I'd like. So we made the decision to send them to another rehab group that has a vet. Hopefully they can make sure that everything is OK, and can make both of these girls better. This decision was made after I was already at work, so I didn't get to say goodbye to the girls. I was a little sad about it and then my mom sent me the last picture. Cue me crying at my desk for the second time this week. This is the first time I've passed a baby on to another rehabber, and it surprised me that I was so sad. Of course I would have loved to keep these babies, but this is where the hard part comes in. Rehabbing isn't about me, or what I want. It's about doing what is best for the animal. Full stop. I've quoted my rehabber friend Leanne many times and I will continue to say it: We let them go because we love them.
