Someone’s dream. Part 2. . . I pass this new build every time I go to work at Hastings Caves. . I never see anyone here on site. But there’s often slight additions. This week however someone was working on it this week, while I was away up north, and it’s gained a roof. God Im so excited for the owners. . Watching this very slowly get built, cements that *oneday I’d like to build my own little place. I’m not sure if my skillset of shit attention is suited to such a project. But I’ll give it acrack. I’ll spend all the money on really big windows. . . *Oneday means ‘When I get a real full time good paid job, a water view block of land and when I can afford to get & pay a mortgage)’ . . . If you get a chance go see the outdoor cooking at the Winter Feast - go to the outside bit. Just go. .It’s free entry tonight- like Freeeeee! & the weather is clear & still . Excellent night on the town. . Best place to be in Hobart - take the family for early dinner as doors open from 4pm. . (Or you could call in sick.... ) . Get some warm Gin concoction & be memorised by clever folks cooking off these massive frames on open fire. They have these finger warming fire pits sprinkled everywhere. The actual outdoor cooking structures are simply works of functional art & the buzz around preparing it is total entertainment by itself. . . I get a small snipit of setting up inside at @yeastiebeastiedoughnuts. You see sliw cooked meat takes all day to prepare. The smell that wafts through is to die for. I love this. . .I could drink gin & watch these guys prepare fire food forever. . Heavy Metal Kitchen - head fire Chef Mona @vincetrim has these an enormous BBQ going on cooking lots of different meats. He’s bloody clever. You should see the size of it and also watch him & his team work. @meatsmith_melb are in town too. @ahwill_ you were so right about their food. @hollydaviswholefood & @meganbrown28 has delicious fireroasted fish. I’m trying that tonight if I can. But get in early - they sell out quick. We tried the Jambu lamb last night. Now that’s so good- . @miznonmelbourne - the has these impressive swinging octopus racks - has coupled up with locals from Hamlet Cafe. @chefmassimomele Is inside.... Check those massive beef meat spears. I love all his food. He’s a staple for me now. And a stack more. Tell me if I missed anyone... I’m terrible at remembering -I never have time to look properly. But also there are the fresh oysters. Take the kids & over to the @antarticaiceco ice tables to taste, touch & smell native Tasmanian angasi oysters & compare them to introduced, farmed Pacific oysters; or, take a seat in the fire circle on the lawns & use sticks to cook and eat warren- native periwinkles. . Hellfire + brimstone- so they had this enormous wood barbecue set up just outside the winter feast - was run by @monamuseum Executive Chef @vincetrim Here was my favourite place - massive mechanical handmade frames for fire roasting beef fish and lamb to feed the masses at @dark_mofo . During the day I fluttered between rotating drying my aprons next to wood fires - and as I did, I was always mesmerised watching the chaps setup the #heavymetalkitchen. So good. I didn’t see much beyond the Feast - we spent the week prepping at @yeastiebeastiedoughnuts ... every night we got smashed. With often queues out the door. Thankyou to all that patiently waited in line. 6hrs in your feet coated in sugar was prettyfull on. . . . But I’m going to continue to ramp up my own outdoor fire cooking learning. These guys know there stuff. Push a few more boundaries in my beach fire cooking thinking. It’s lightly raining here when I made up my first morning coffee, so I donned the oilskin & wellies & rugged up and when there was a clear break in the weather, headed to the beach for a crisp walk. Naturally then, 15 minutes later, when the weather decided to full on piss down, And I was so out far away from any shelter, beyond the slippery rock pools with the waves crashing in, the rain came in sideways and I tried to keep my ill fitting rain-blurry glasses on my head . Unsuccessfully. . . $&@#%*+ ¥£{=!!!!! . Freezing & wet, I headed to the @jettyhouse to dry off by the fire. I could see the smoke out of the chimney so I knew she was home. The coffee is always bloody good here and the @the_wild_sister chat is excellent. Funny how the universe lines you up at the same time for things. . We are planning doing a hidden long table winter dinner here next month. And drinks around this fire. Maybe alittle music, but dressing the house up with candles & greenery for alittle fun. Why not. I do love a good party. . I’m into wholesome tasty warm bread kinda suppers. And good excuse for a catchup....and camp. Rosie’s place sleeps so many! So next week, after @dark_mofo, we start testing out mulled wine recipes in the lead up to it.
