Finding inspo in this espaliered ginkgo I spotted at the National Arboretum in DC while visiting family over the weekend. The espalier process of continually pruning and training the tree in this form is a great metaphor for cultivating good habits in our day to day lives. We are all so busy and life moves so fast, so we often forget that small steps add up to much larger ones; and that with enough of these steps over time, we can mold ourselves and our lives into what we seek. Many years ago, I realized that I loved plants and wanted to pursue this work professionally. With enough small steps, I was able to make this happen — and continue to work on my skills and practice daily. Whatever it is that you seek, don’t forget that every journey begins with a single step, and that the “finish line” you have in mind at the time may not be where you want to end up...so just enjoy the ride.

Before the good weather goes, I thought I’d grab this morning’s shot outside (BEFORE & AFTERs included of course). We opted for a simple lawn out front of the house. There was a lawn of sorts out here when we arrived but it was lumpy, weed-riddled and water-logged. We had to dig the whole thing up, lay proper drainage, rotovate and enhance the soil before reseeding. The pond came at a later stage. We had to wait FOREVER for the planning department to deal with our application for a small walled garden here. By the time it was finally processed our project was LONG finished and we couldn’t face back to diggers and builders all over again. The pond was a quicker fix and we now love it!!
