When I found this beautiful blue feather recently, I was struck by how its appearance changes so drastically depending on light and shadow conditions. At its core, though, the feather is always the same -- strong spine, fine details of color, texture, and symmetry adding up to a beautiful whole. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Life situations, especially our reactions to transitions and uncertainties, can change how we appear on the surface. Stress and anxiety can darken our moods, impact our relationships, and hide the beauty of our true essence. Lately there has been lots of talk about "the glow up" and focusing on appearing to be at your best. And in the age of @instagram and #instaculture it's easy to think that the #glowup is all about appearances -- looking good and looking like you have it together. Repost from @lauraclaireyoga - About a third of the way through our pretty epic vacation and now we're setting up to attend - and for me, speak at - the Wonder Women In Tech conference in Long Beach. . . . I love speaking at conferences, I love sharing my story and hearing others, I love being able to offer a little something to help women thrive, and I experience imposter syndrome every. single. time. I see a stellar line-up of speakers and feel inexperienced and insufficient, question whether I really should be there, and figure it's only a matter of time before I'm found out! . . I say this because confronting imposter syndrome is one of the quickest ways to deal with it. Observing, acknowledging and even simply naming it as what it is; a mental phenomenon MANY people experience, and not something that is really a part of me or about me. There's no shame in it, it's natural, and also can be a good thing - it motivates me to make sure I know my stuff. . . Another antidote to imposter syndrome is to not try to be anyone else - and fall into the trap of becoming an imposter! We can and must be authentic, speak truthfully about what matters to us, and trust the process and the people that brought us here. . . . Imposter syndrome affects many different people, but can be more common in women because of the association of confidence with belonging. If you're a minority in a room or in your work (hi! ), and there's other questions about how well you belong, you're more likely to have that feeling of not belonging filters into other areas of your life. . . .
