If you pour liquid oxygen between strong magnets like these it will hang in place, attracted by the magnetic forces. Why? Because liquid oxygen is a special kind of magnetic, called paramagnetic · To understand what’s going on here we need understand what’s going on with electrons ⚛️ · Electrons spin on their axis and this creates tiny magnetic fields · When two electrons pair up one spins in one direction whilst the other spins in the opposite direction · This means that the two opposite magnetic charges cancel each other out and the overall magnetic charge is zero · In some atoms electrons are left without a partner electron to pair up with, resulting in a small charge which doesn’t get cancelled out · So atoms with unpaired electrons have an small magnetic charge - they act like tiny magnets · Oxygen molecules (O2) have two unpaired electrons, so oxygen has a small magnetic charge · When oxygen is a gas the molecules move too fast for this to have any effect · And when oxygen is a liquid all the molecules are randomly orientated, which means that the magnetic charges face in all directions and cancel each other out · But! When you pass liquid oxygen through a normal magnet, all the magnetic fields in the liquid oxygen align to create a magnetic field, which interacts with the normal magnet · So until all the liquid oxygen evaporates into its gas state it’s attracted to the magnet and is held in place. About 50 years ago, most people believed adult brains made no new neurons. But research in the 60’s began challenging this idea when new techniques for labeling dividing cells showed the birth of new neurons (neurogenesis) in the adult brain of rats. Over the next few decades scientists kept discovering adult neurogenesis in other species, including birds, mice and monkeys. In 2013, scientists in Sweden wanted to see what’s going on in humans and used a technique to retroactively date cells in live humans (by looking at Carbon 14 levels). Their work predicted about 1,400 new neurons are being born each day with little to no decline as we age. But a new study in humans totally wrecked this theory when scientists sliced up 59 brains and couldn’t find any new neurons in adults— showing that new neurons dropped sharply within the first year of life, with only a few small islands of baby neurons appearing until age 13. So is this final proof that no new neurons are made in adults? It’s hard to say. The Swedish scientists responded and said neurogenesis is a super rare phenomenon, and it’s tough to find 1,400 new neurons in a big sea of millions of hippocampal cells. I think the debate here is starting to get good— and if it’s true, we’re gonna have to figure out how human brains continue to change throughout life without adding new cells, the way a rodent brain does. One clue is that it can take many years for a new human brain cell to mature, so even an adult brain could contain many cells with functions that aren’t yet fully defined.
