No Acting, Just Reacting Required

Director Leo McCarey was famous for his off-the-cuff rogue working style. Actors were often told to show up for filming without script, dialogue, or even a clue about their upcoming scene. Such was the case for Ralph Bellamy when he arrived on set for the first day's production of "The Awful Truth" to find Irene Dunne at a piano. Dunne was plucking out the tune to "Home on the Range," and McCarey asked Bellamy if he could sing. "Can't get from one note to the other," the actor replied. "Great!" McCarey said and ordered the cameras to roll while Dunne played and Bellamy sang for all he was worth. After finishing the song, they looked over to Leo who was doubled over with laughter. Finally he said, "Print it!" The scene ended up in the finished picture. McCarey surmised that life was funniest in the raw. I'd say he was absolutely right.

“An Affair to Remember” (1957) was one of Leo McCarey’s notorious films in which the actors were given scenes in which they improvised their lines. According to McCarey, the director, it made for better quality acting. Having directed “Love Affair” in 1939, the film which was the “original” version of “An Affair to Remember”, as well as many other classics including “Going My Way” (1944) and “The Awful Truth” (1937), McCarey was regarded in Hollywood as a very capable director. In fact, he was the very first director to ever win #bestdirector, #bestpicture, and #bestwriting at the Academy awards. However, ironically, McCarey didn’t start out in the movies. His father pressured him to study law, which he pursued for several years as a criminal defense attorney in California. When he arrived in Hollywood, at Universal Studios, he worked as an assistant to Tod Browning (he also worked at Hal Roach Studios starting in 1923 where he would make four films with the legendary duo Laurel and Hardy). One of his crowning triumphs, “An Affair to Remember” was the second of three movies in which #carygrant and #deborahkerr would star together in. The film won three Oscars (costumes, cinematography, and best original song). #classichollywood #oldhollywood #classic #leomccarey #oldmovies #the50s #director
