I'm on call this weekend - hence the #scrubs at home! . As I'm working on clinic notes, I realize how up close and personal the questions I ask my patients are. Some patients think I'm being nosy but once I explain the rationale, how it better helps me recommend screening tests, protection methods or contraception, they are more open with me and honest with their answers. In med school, you learn to take a basic sexual history. It's AWKWARD and really uncomfortable. . Over the years I've learned: patients feed off your vibe - if you're uncomfortable, they'll be uncomfortable. If you don't ask, patients often don't think you care about the answers. Tip one: be comfortable asking uncomfortable questions. Your patients will appreciate if you're open and welcoming to whatever answer they give. As patients, there are the five P's your provider often asks about: partners, practices, past history, #protection and pregnancy. The way they ask might vary but in general, this is what we're wanting to know and why. Partners: are you sexually active? How many partners - are they men, women or both? This helps me determine your risk factors. Practices: how are you having sex - oral, vaginal or anal. This matters how and where we test for STIs. Protection: are you using protection, how often? This allows dialogue to discuss safe sex practices. Past: have you ever had an STI? Have you ever been tested? Allows me background and if you need testing or retesting. Pregnancy: are you trying to #conceive? How are you preventing pregnancy? Opens dialogue to contraception or plan B. Finally, we'll chat about any questions you might have, please feel open and free to discuss anything! Although this conversation might be uncomfortable and seem invasive, it's one of the best ways to get to know my patients and gain their trust of me with their health and #body. I live by this statement for my patients and challenge more providers to create this environment -> My office is a place of no judgement and a safe place to be yourself.
