Hey friend, let’s get real for a minute. Do you ever letter something you saw someone else do because you thought it looked cool? And then when you did it, you didn’t like it? ‍♀️ Here’s the thing about creating your own style... We get ideas from others and we may be inspired to try something we saw someone else do. But when we try it ourselves, that’s when we get to decide what parts of it fit with us and what doesn’t fit. In these two videos, I’m using @karinmarkers. I want to share the behind the scenes thoughts I was having. . In my “Habit” video here I was trying a style that I’ve seen around a lot with the offset outlines. I think it looks so cool when others do it. But when I did it myself, I actually didn’t like it. I could have just thought: man, I am not as good as those other people who do it so well. But I didn’t. I looked at it from a place of feeling confident in my own lettering. I realized that I’m sure if I practiced it enough I could get really good at it. BUT I didn’t love it because it doesn’t feel like me. That’s not something anyone else can decide for me. It had to come from the place where I’ve been building confidence in my own lettering. I get to decide that. . So in the next video “Confidence” I outlined the letters directly on the letters instead of offset. This felt so much more like me. It doesn’t matter which one anyone else likes better, when I do something like this in the future, I know for me I won’t do the offset outline. That doesn’t mean that way is wrong for anyone else. . Doesn’t that feel so good to know that you get to be in control? . How to develop your own lettering style️⁣ ⁣⁣ Having your own lettering style is a process that doesn't happen in a click, it's a learning curve & takes some time⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Today I'm sharing with you some ideas & tips that you can implement to style up your lettering⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So, basically you can change the following:⁣ Width: letters may vary from wide to narrow ⁣⁣ Shape: letters can be oval or angular ⁣⁣ Angle: letter can be written upright ⁣or slanted (any angle) ⁣ Ascender/descender shape: can be straight⁣ or loopy⁣ Space: letters can go as closed or spaced as you like ⁣ Connection: you can leave letters separated or connect them⁣ Baseline: you can go regular or bouncy⁣ on the baseline⁣ Design: you can design your letters to be as simple or as flourished⁣ as you like⁣ Type: you can stick to lower case letters or mix it up with some uppercase letters⁣ ⁣⁣ You can also, ⁣⁣ Change the letter style itself and either choose a favorite or mix up different styles of each letter ⁣⁣ I chose "s" because it holds lots of styles⁣ Some other letters that imply much variations include: r, f, t (cross bar) beside ascenders & descenders as well⁣ ⁣⁣ A mix & match from the above options will produce different lettering styles. You may have experiment to find the style you desire ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣One thing you need to keep in mind whatever style you develop is LEGIBILITY!!! Because there's no point in having a beautiful lettering but others are struggling to read, right! ‍♀️ ⁣ ⁣ On a side note,⁣ Not all these apply if you're doing calligraphy like copperplate, spencerian etc ... Because calligraphy is less flexible and implies strict rules like a specific slant, same interspace, oval letters etc... You can add flourishes, you can change the width of a letter but keep it consistent through your piece! 10 ways to letter X! Which style is your favorite? . Here I’m using Prismacolor Scholar Brush pens. They have a firm, medium size nib. They’re good if you like firm nibs but I wouldn’t go out of my way to have them because of the color options. The marker with the pink lid is the darker red. ‍♀️ You know I need my pinks! . 10 Ways to Letter W! Which style is your favorite? . I’m using Crayola supertips which I love! When I first started, I didn’t like these, I only liked Crayola broadline. But I had some friends who were opposite of me. Now I love both depending on if I want larger or smaller lettering. Which do you like better? This is a good example of how there is not one perfect pen for everyone! There are pens that are easier for beginners, but don’t be afraid to try different pens to find one that fits with you.
