I had a hard time writing this #leveragelove4 - I wasn't sure what to say. These things always make me reevaluate where mine and the pup's relationships are and honestly they provoke a lot of change each time, whether it be with training goals, day-to-day management of Kai's reactivity, or dealing with Rosie's phobias and fears. I've focused on the pup's relationship with me the last few #leveragelove fundraiser campaigns, but I wanted to talk about Rosie and Kaiser's relationship now:
Kaiser has never been reactive with Rosie. I have no clue why - since day one after coming home, he presented signs of anxiety/aggression with every other dog we met. Looking back at their SPCA meeting, I don't remember seeing any red flags. He's always been very attached to her and is respectful of her space.
Rosie had a really hard time adjusting to Kai being a part of the family, and unfortunately the fact that we did not handle the transition with any sort of tact didn't help her at all. Rosie lost her big sister, my 15 year old dog Katie, a few months before Kai came home as a part of the family. The loss hit her hard - she would stop eating for a days at a time, she stopped playing with other dogs, and she just laid around at home.
It took a few months for Rose to finally start warming up to Kai. Eventually, they played together a few times a week. Then they played together everyday. Then one day I came home from work and they were cuddled up on Rosie's little bed together and it made all the behavior problems they each had and all the fights between the two of them and all the family friction worth it.
Now, almost two years into Kai's life with us, these two are completely inseparable and co-dependent on each other.

Growing up Mom wasn't always dealt the best cards in life. Being raised in a dysfunctional home with unstable parents was pretty challenging to say the least. Her mom moved across the country when she was just 14 and we won't even get into it about her dad. Growing up she struggled daily with depression and anxiety. Always having that feeling of not being enough and having a void that needed to be filled. Well..... that's where we came along. We give mom the unconditional love her parents failed to give her. We give her a purpose and reason to get up everyday with hope that the future won't be as bad as the past. We make mom laugh hard, make her want to be a better person, and bring her a happiness she hasn't had in years! We're not really sure who rescued who. .

"My dog taught me everything I need to know. It’s okay sometimes to just eat and sleep. When you fall down, get back up, shake it off, forget about it and go on. Be very brave no matter your size. Make your own fun. Unleash your talents. Learn new tricks no matter your age. Make new friends. Sniff out opportunities. Chase after your dreams. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. At the end of the day, it is best to snuggle no matter what has happened. Everyday is a brand new day, just be happy!"
Most of you already know but my dogs are literally my life. I fight with social anxiety and depression and have for years. I didn't even get my license til the age of 23 because my anxiety made me terrified of driving. When I finally did get it, it was thanks to Beebs sitting in the car with me helping me calm down so I could actually practice. Fast forward 5 years later and I still hate it. In all honesty, I haven't even driven in months...maybe even a year. I've gone back to my old ways of letting my anxiety control my life again. Thanks to the pups and my amazing friends (Manya and Lauren, THANK YOU), I'm slowly starting to get back out there again. The dogs give me a reason to get my butt back out there and try new & scary things even if I really don't want to and I love them for it. This girl is a little love monster. Her velveteen body wiggles with joy when she finds you and when she is even remotely close to humans and dogs alike, she sticks her sweet tongue out, hoping to score some kisses. Coming home to this girl is the best thing ever because her entire self exudes love. It hasn't always been this way... a haze of fear clouded her true self... sometimes I couldn't even pet her without risk of ferocious baby alligator snaps. These days, now that she knows constant love and affection, she's beyond happy to give and receive love.

Malibu has given us a new world! She has given me patience to work with her training and instilled routine in my day that has carried over into other areas of my life. Since adopting Bu she has helped us be a bigger voice in the rescue community. She gives us an even deeper passion in advocating for pit bull type dogs. She provides us endless smiles, laughs and love by just being her silly swagger butt self. She gives us strength and the ability to love her unconditionally. Malibu opens up the outdoors like never before. All of this because someone didn't see the love she had to offer. We are forever thankful to call her family.

This week has been rough for Forever Foster familes at @frostedfaces We got sad/scary news about pups at the vet and devastaing news that two had passed. We lean on each other for support and hold our babies ever so tight. One thing that never slows down with a senior dog is their capacity to love. As we adventure on with Mos' bucket list I am so thankful for everyday we have with our old man. #leveragelove4 #rescuestrong
It's been an overwhelming, poop kind of week. Some days are discouraging, sad and upsetting, especially in the rescue 'biz'. The best part of life have four paws (us) and the fact we can take over the bed whilst the humans sleep like pretzels We can't wait for @cjiro #leveragelove4 campaign.

My Papa Human was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in December 2014. The next several months were super hard for the whole family, not only having to deal with a lifestyle change (testing blood sugar 2-3x/day? Booo.), but also because their beloved 14 yr old border collie, Zoe, died in March 2015. The house felt too quiet, too empty, too lonely. It was not a fun way to start the year.
Then my Mama Human heard that Maddie's Fund was doing their annual free adoptions the last weekend of May and convinced Papa and my human that she "just want to go look." O.o Yeahhh. They came home with a puppy, the first one Papa Human or my human had ever had.
The house was suddenly more active, more alive, more like home again. I wasn't even that active of a puppy, but having me there meant there was a familiar order in my humans' lives once more (let me out to pee, feed me, let me out to poo, play with me, tell me to take a nap, let me out to pee, dinner time, play with me, let me out to pee, bed time). And as I got older and my human started grad school, it fell on Papa Human's shoulders to take me on walks. The older I got, the longer the walks, until now we're doing two hours easy several times a week.
Thanks to me (and maybe a few lifestyle changes), Papa Human dropped several clothing sizes and can now chase me around the yard without getting winded! He's healthier than he's been in years and looking good. You're welcome, humans. *wise nod* #leveragelove4 [August 11, 2017]
