LET’S TALK ABOUT SUFFERING. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ January 2, 2018. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Snapping a cheesy tourist pic on Brooklyn Bridge in 0 degree weather, hair flying everywhere, freezing our faces off. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was cold but that didn’t stop us from walking over that famous bridge. There’s just something about New York that makes you feel like anything is possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I wonder how I would’ve felt if I knew then that Brad would be hit with so many health challenges soon after we got home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s been nearly a year and a half of endless doctors appointments, medicine changes, and money out the door. We’ve gotten our hopes up to be crushed time and time again as nothing has worked. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yesterday, while I was speaking at my old high school, a grade 7-9 teenager asked me this question: “If God is real, why can’t we feel Him when it’s hard?” I’ve got to be honest, this question hit me hard. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This past semester, I’ve learned so much about the theology of suffering. I chose to do two assignments on the topic to understand it more. And I’ve got to tell you, I’ve been so comforted by what I’ve learned. It’d take me all day to share it with you but I want to say this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You’re not alone in your suffering. None of us are. God is with you. God is fully divine. Yet He also became man. God isn’t aloof to your suffering. He went through it himself. Taking on the weight of the world on His shoulders. Bearing everything for us. God could have found another way, after all - He’s God. He didn’t have to do this but He chose to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am comforted knowing God is in control and yet He is so intimately involved in our lives that He chooses to suffer with us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But our hope isn’t just in a God who suffers, but a God who is victorious. A God who conquers all sin and evil and suffering. He is the one who has the final say. And while we may suffer temporarily, we are assured of an incomprehensibly beautiful future with Him. ❤️

He is the Good Shepherd. He is the gate by which we enter the fold and go out to pasture. He is the shepherd that leads and comforts, that guides and keep us safe. He is the one who lays down His life for the sake of His sheep. By Him we have an entrance into the flock.⠀ ⠀ And His sheep hear His voice.⠀ ⠀ We all know that sheep tend to wander. And we, like sheep, are easily distracted and drawn away from the safety of the fold. We have a tendency to set our eyes on “greener grass” and forget that true freedom lies within the guidance of the shepherd. He knows what’s best for us, even when we fail to see it ourselves. ⠀ ⠀ So don’t let your heart lead you astray. Listen for His voice. Listen for His call. Listen for His plan. ⠀ ⠀ He is speaking, He is guiding, and He loves you more than you know. It's okay to hate the monotony of your day and love it all at the same time. . I've found that it’s the most mundane things in my day that are an opportunity to stop and refocus. The watering of my plants, the spreading of peanut butter on yet another slice of bread for my kid (why are they always hungry?!), the sweeping of crumbs on my kitchen floor, the folding of my little ones’ laundry. . Sometimes I have to remind myself what a gift it is to get to do all of this. To have all of this. A loud, messy house, full of so much life. And so much need. Most days it takes every ounce of my energy to make it through, but it’s holy work that I’m grateful to do, even if some days I don't feel up to the task of doing it.

⠀ There is always fear when we put trust in ourselves. We are so limited in our ability to truly control any outcome, and trusting ourselves only leads to worry.⠀ ⠀ But there is no fear in trusting the Father. He has promised to lead those who love Him, to plant them, and allow their roots to grow deep. He has promised that those who trust in Him will bear fruit. ⠀ ⠀ There is no fear in trusting Him, only security and strength. When we live our lives in trust and surrender to Him, we have no reason to worry about what the future holds. Like a tree planted by streams of water, we need not fear when the drought comes. Trust keeps us at the source of life, and allows us, through humility, to know more of Him.⠀ ⠀ “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, ⠀ whose trust is the Lord. What a joy to know a Father who gently leads us on the journey of life, who loves us unconditionally. What a joy to know a Savior who gave His life as a ransom for the many, who paid the price that we could never pay, who has set us free from the bondage of sin. What an incredible God we serve.
