Lili Elbe, who was born 136 years ago today, was a Danish trans woman, best-known for undergoing one of the first-known gender affirming surgical processes. . While studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Elbe (then known by her assigned-birth name, Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener) met fellow artist Gerda Gottlieb; the two married in 1904. . In the early years of their marriage, both worked as illustrators while pursuing their own artistic passions, including Gottlieb’s focus on female portraiture. When Anna Larsen, one of Gottlieb’s models, failed to appear for a sitting, Gottlieb asked Elbe to wear stockings and heels so she could continue to work on the portrait’s lower-half. “From the first moment” she donned feminine attire, Elbe “felt very much at home.” . In 1912, they moved to Paris, where Elbe lived as a woman. . In 1930, Elbe had the first in a series of four gender-affirming surgeries; in October, a Danish court invalidated the Wegener marriage, and Elbe changed her sex and name. By 1931, she was in a relationship with Claude Lejeune. . In June 1931, Elbe had an operation consisting of vaginoplasty and a uterus implant; her immune system rejected the uterus, however, and she developed an infection. . On September 13, 1931, Lili Elbe died of cardiac arrest caused by the infection; she was forty-eight. . Despite claims to the contrary, Elbe was not the first transgender woman to undergo gender-affirming surgery; she was, in fact, the second (of whom we know). . In 2000, David Ebershoff wrote “The Danish Girl,” a fictionalized account of Elbe’s life, which was adapted into a movie of the same name in 2015.
