[gifted ] Today on #thespineswalks : my favorite street in Lincoln Park & a French translation, which I read REAL quick this week! Interestingly, the translator is Molly Ringwald, whom we all know from the iconic film Sixteen Candles. There is a lot to be said about the role and importance (or lack thereof) given to translators, so I’m looking forward to reading some expert opinions on this one! • As for the book itself, my full review is now on the blog, so go check that out for my thoughts on the book and on the PR comparisons of this book to Call Me By Your Name. Overall, though? It is beautifully written and beautifully translated. The themes are exploratory and the approach is poetic. Interestingly, I don’t know if this book will leave a lasting impression on me. Time will tell, but both the quiet, lighthanded style of writing and also the nearly-novella length of the story might prevent it from truly penetrating in the long-term, but either way, it’s worth a read! • Any thoughts on this book or on Molly Ringwald as translator here I’d love to know your thoughts!

✨How you can respect translators and interpreters:✨ Not all translators are interpreters and vice versa. No matter how many times you see someone “I asked my translator to say that….” this is wrong. Translators convey the written word. Interpreters convey the spoken word. ➖ Don’t ask T&Is to lower their rates. You wouldn’t ask a doctor, architect, teacher to do this. But somehow peeps think it’s ok to ask freelance T&Is! (A potential client asked me to travel two hours away for an hour of interpreting services. I said it would be my full day rate and gas. He said no. So I said no.) ➖ When you plan on going to volunteer abroad to a place you don’t know the language, your first question should be: will there be professional interpreters? If the answer is NO, then DON’T GO. Huge red flag and completely unprofessional. ➖ Google “The Tragic Fate of the Afghan Interpreters the U.S. Left Behind” and learn about how the U.S. betrayed interpreters who risked their lives. ➖ Whenever you read a book translated from another language, look up the translator. Honor them, thank them. One of my fave book’s is called “The Bad Girl”/ “La niña mala” by Mario Vargas Llosa. The translator is Edith Grossman, one of the most famous and recognized literary translators of the last century. ➖ A few weeks ago Anthea Bell died, a renowned translator who translated the works of Sebald, Stefan Zweig, Franz Kafka & Sigmund Freud into English. Most likely one of your favorite books was not written in the original language you read it in! Remember this! ➖ Don’t forget that some things might be untranslatable or need to be explained rather than translated. If you watch Game of Thrones and don’t know English, it will be really difficult to understand the significance of Hodor and his final scene. Hodor= Hold The Door. ➖ Look up Harry Potter and translation to learn about how difficult it was for translators of all languages to convey a story with so many new words from English into 60 languages. Dd you know there was a translator needed for the U.S. vs. England’s Eng. version ➖ The most important thing is always invite your translator friends out for some tacos! #aTravelingTranslator

It’s after midnight, and we know it’s past bedtime, but… We’re too excited to sleep because Celestial Bodies by Jokha Alharthi has been longlisted for the International @ManBookerPrizes! • • In the village of al-Awafi in Oman live three sisters. Mayya marries after a heartbreak. Asma marries from a sense of duty. Khawla rejects all offers while waiting for her beloved, who has emigrated to Canada. Elegantly structured, Celestial Bodies is the story of the history and people of modern Oman told through one family’s losses and loves. • • #jokhaalharthi #celestialbodies #SayyidatalQamar #finestfiction #MBI2019 #manbookerinternational #manbookerinternationalprize #book #books #translation #translatedfiction #lovereading #lovebooks #bookstagram #bookish #bookworm #literarytranslation #literaryfiction #literary #bookcommunity #bookprize #bookrecommendation #readwomen #weneeddiversebooks #totalbooknerd #readaroundtheworld #oman #arabictranslation #booksintranslation

Robert Frost Fire and Ice Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.

On the weekend, I attended the Bieler Gespräche, an event that gives writers and literary translators the opportunity to discuss their work in workshop situations. For me, it was particularly exciting that one of my texts had been translated into French and Italian before the event (in Switzerland it is very important that you get your work translated into the other official languages as well!), so that I could go through the different versions with the translators. It was a wonderful experience because I could see first-hand how thoroughly the translators had read my text and even picked up on the most subtle nuances. #bookishevent #literaturveranstaltung #writersconference #autorentreffen #writerslife #autorenleben #literarytranslation #literaturübersetzung #biel #bookstagram #literature #literatur
