I believe continuing to live a joyful and meaningful life does not mean you must no longer miss a loved one who has died. Friends and family have shared with me that they believe they can’t move forward because they still miss their loved one. They believe this must be a sign they haven’t moved forward at all in life. One of my children shared with me that he despised the word grieving. He feels it doesn’t accurately describe everything he has gone through since his older brother died. I believe the word grief is somewhat shrouded in mystery. No one really knows what it is describing... how long is it supposed to last... when does someone “recover” from it. That made me wonder, what if we said “forever changed” instead of grieving? Maybe that would give people a better understanding of our experience.
