Ancient Future is a world-jazz-ambient music group from the late 70s and through the 1980s and 90s. Global fusion, they call their music. After I picked up their debut album ‘Visions of a Peaceful Planet’ on spec in my last Discogs buy, I looked for more and found ‘Natural Rhythms’ (Philo, 1981) available from an Aussie seller (Ed1972) so I jumped on it. . . The cover art is by Balinese artist Nyomen Kawiana, in traditional Balinese style but created for this album, showing Balinese frogs playing instruments used by Ancient Future. As the cover indicates, and the liner notes explain, these ‘interspecies recordings’ involve Ancient Future playing guitar, zither, flute, tabla, kulkul, kajar and more, accompanied by frogs. Two tracks are recorded entirely in situ, in California with Pacific tree frogs. Others are recorded in the studio, with overdubs of Balinese rice paddy frogs and bamboo percussion recorded in situ. In this track ‘Valley of the Moon’ you hear Matthew Montfort on zither with Pacific tree frogs. . . This post is inspired by the most beautiful sound I heard on IG yesterday, from @ellentresselt – the sound of thousands of ‘peepers’ emerged from winter sleep and singing in the coming spring. As a record collector, album art has always been important to me. I can’t believe it has taken this long for me to actually do art for an album, but here’s the first of a few more to come in 2019: the newest LP by Seattle’s own @zebrahuntband, which will be released very soon on Spanish label Tenorio Cotebade. Mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control)(!), US distribution via Forced Exposure. I’ve always loved this band, so when they asked me if I was interested, I couldn’t say no! The image is a filtered digital collage over an acrylic abstract painting that I just thought looked pretty. I guess they did too! Really love how this turned out, can’t wait to get a copy.
