In the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (2013), there is an excellent article explaining how watermelon is a potential functional food for sore muscle relief in athletes, and anyone who engages in regular physical activity and fitness.

We do know that watermelon contains a variety of important vitamins and minerals, but perhaps its most impressive nutrient is lycopene. Two cups of watermelon contains almost 20 mg of lycopene and, on average, watermelon contains about 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes!

Lycopene is an extensively studied antioxidant with the ability to protect against a variety of diseases, such as lipid dysregulation, diabetes, formation of cancer cells, neurodegenerative diseases (like dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease), and osteoporosis. Most notable is the ability of lycopene to protect against oxidative stress, like that which is produced during exercise and resistance training, which makes this nutrient so valuable for athletic performance by improving recovery after a workout.

The only time I eat this many tomatoes is when I’m in Italy, it’s the only place where they actually have taste! So of course I take complete advantage when I’m here and eat them in every possible way. Today I made a simple classic tomato soup for lunch which is so so delicious and full of vital antioxidant lycopene which is a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate and vitamin K
.
Simple tomato soup recipe
.
8 cups cherry tomatoes
5 garlic
1 onion
2 Veg stock
Handful of fresh basil
Litre Spring water
Himalayan salt
Pepper
1. On an oven tray place 4 cups of tomatoes, the sliced onion and garlic and roast for 20 minutes
2. In a large pan cook the remainder of the tomatoes with the rest of the ingredients
3. Once what’s in the oven is roasted remove an add to the saucepan.
4. Cook everything together for 25-30 minutes
5. Finally put the soup into a blender and blend. Pulse to get a nice thick texture rather than completely smooth
6. And serve!! Sprinkle some of your favourite herb and enjoy this flavourful tomato soup!
Tomatoes are not in season but these farmer's market tomatoes looked tasty! I'll be adding some to my winter stew. Tomatoes are one of the best sources of lycopene, especially when cooked. Lycopene is a carotenoid that a recent paper published by my mentor and good friend, Dr. Bruce Ames, identifies as a potential "longevity vitamin" due to its interaction with proteins that protect against diseases of aging. In the paper, Bruce discusses how lycopene is one of the most efficient singlet oxygen quenchers known and has been shown to reduce oxidative stress cells and in DNA, reduce cancer risk, metabolic disorders, heart disease, heart attacks, and more.

Edit: People asking about tomatoes and inflammation...in addition to lycopene, there are a wide variety of anti-inflammatory compounds in tomatoes. Both epidemiological studies and intervention trials have shown that tomatoes lower biomarkers of inflammation in humans.

It’s a sad time of the year now that melons are out of season but I’ve noticed at my grocery store, they are super cheap right now Watermelon and Cantaloupe are my two favorite melons and a couple of the best snack foods.

Melons are so great because they are pretty much just water disguised as food. Because of this, you get lots of volume for little calories. Both these bowls were around 500g worth of fruit and right around 200 calories. I am a boredom eater so these are wonderful me. Here’s how I pick my cantaloupe. They have been really good this year so I definitely recommend buying one next time you’re at the store. 1️⃣Find one that is heavy for its size 2️⃣Make sure there are no major blemishes.
3️⃣Press on the butt and if it is soft, it’s ripe. If it’s firm, not yet. The butt is the opposite side of the stem. I don’t know what the actual name is but it seems like a butt to me. .

How to pick a good watermelon 1️⃣Find one that is heavy for its size
2️⃣Find one that has a large sun spot.
3️⃣Find one with those brown marks on it that feel and look kind of like tree bark. This is where insects try and get to the fruit because they know it’s sweet.
In my experience the watermelons with these qualities are always the best! .
