Hui-Lan Oei (1899-1996) established herself as one of the most fashionable, chic women in the East and the West. Through her father's immense fortune she took Europe by storm and married the diplomat Vi Kyuin Wellington Koo. Before the marriage she had already made a name for herself in London society - an article in the Times acknowledged that "no dance or other function was complete without Madame Koo, a famous beauty who drove her own motor car about London ... a little grey two-seater Rolls-Royce that could often to be seen threading rapidly through traffic." She rubbed shoulders with all the big names - Edda Mussolini, the Churchills, Queen Mary and future Queen Mother Elizabeth, Madame Chiang Kai-Shek (see my post on her from 3 days ago ), and many more. She wore her Chinese heritage with pride in Europe and can be seen photographed here at The State Ball in Buckingham Palace, 1921, a ball which was no small honor to attend.
