Some of the cultural wedding nuances I observed at the #HappilyEverEze wedding include
1. : There was a kola nut breaking and sharing ceremony between the parties to symbolise unity, generosity and welcoming of the new family to the #Igbo community. The man performing the ceremony spoke in Igbo so I may have missed a thing or two. I got a chance to taste the kola nut and understood why it’s the men who eat it. It has a rich bitter taste that stays on the tongue and then becomes sweet after you swallow it.
2. : there was an exchange of chickens between the male representatives of the two families to symbolise the giving away and acceptance of the bride and groom. The ritual symbolises blessings from both families to the couple and well wishes of fertility to the couple. During the exchange, the hens were blessed to lay many eggs and increase in number. This was so much fun to hear and see.
3. : the showering of money on the couple. Unlike in Kenya where the couple usually asks for support in money form before the wedding, both #Nigerians and #Malawians don’t have the #Harambee mentality or culture and so the couple and their families plan the wedding on their own and during the ceremony those who wish, shower the couple with money. Malawian Kwacha, Nigerian Naira, US Dollars.
4. : no matter the region, country, continent, if it is an African wedding, there will be lots of dancing and more dancing and more dancing. There’s no end to it. And truth be told, both @drelviseze and @chifundochilera had the moves and the energy to keep the mood going.
5. : The brevity of the Christian officiation of the marriage. As a Roman Catholic, the brevity and manner of Protestant wedding rites, more so in a garden, has always been fascinating. If you have no idea what I mean, think of the contrast between a full Catholic Mass in church with the addition of wedding vows vs a garden wedding.
That said, I wish Mr and Mrs Eze a happy marriage.
Almost everyone right now is obsessed with #workingout , getting those abs popping and those arms and legs saucing . But I find myself in the same lazy spot where I can think of starting going to the gym but nuh man am too young. What do you think guys, do I need to go to the #gym or get myself a girlfriend?
