Mr. Marmota, ranger of the alpine wilderness, would like to take a moment to remind the nature lovers out there of the seven principles of the leave no trace ethic. In order to keep wild places wild it’s important that every explorer of the outdoors be familiar with these practices whenever they set out on the trail. It’s up to all of us to make sure the natural sanctity of these ecosystems remains preserved. In order for us to sustainability enjoy our adventures in the natural world it’s recommended that we follow these basic steps:
1) Plan ahead and prepare.
2) Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
3) Dispose of waste properly.
4) Minimize campfire impacts.
5) Leave what you find.
6) Be considerate of other visitors.
7) Respect wildlife (Mr. Marmota’s personal favorite)
All of these steps are simple to follow but some take a bit of preparation and practice to get the hang of. There is much more detailed information out there that takes a closer look into each of these steps.
When it comes to respecting wildlife, one of the most important things you can do is not share your snacks! Feeding wildlife hinders their health, alters their behavior and makes them vulnerable to predators and others dangers. This big boy was soaking in the views when I knelt down from a safe distance away to photograph him. Before I knew it he was motoring his way right up to me looking for treats. Marmots don’t need a handful of trail mix to survive! There is plenty of lush vegetation for these critters to gorge on up here. Please don’t give in to those hopeful yearning eyes, no wild animal should be made dependent on us to provide them a source of food.
