Van der Ast introduced a number of important innovations into flower still-lifes. This bouquet is painted much more freely than those of his predecessors, and is restricted to just a few types of flower. This makes it easier to imagine that this elegant bouquet actually existed.
The flowers exude an air of exclusivity, which is reinforced by the costly vase of Chinese porcelain and the collection of exotic shells.

Johannes Vermeer, The Milkmaid, 1660, oil on canvas, 46 x 41 cm, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
Johannes Vermeer, 1632–1675, created paintings that are among the most beloved and revered images in the history of art. Although only about 36 of his paintings survive, these rare works are among the greatest treasures in the world’s finest museums. Vermeer began his career in the early 1650’s by painting biblical and mythological scenes, but most of his later paintings, the ones for which he is most famous, depict scenes of daily life in interior settings. These works are remarkable for their purity of light and form, qualities that convey a serene, timeless sense of dignity. They invite you to contemplate on the one hand and find a symbolic and allegorical meaning on the other. The milkmaid in this picture carefully measures the milk into an earthenware bowl. She is fully absorbed in her activity. The milkmaid has a strong physical presence, created through the extraordinarily subtle use of light and shade. The low vantage point and pyramidal composition lend monumentality and a sense of dignity to the figure. Vermeer restricted his palette mainly to the primary colors of red, blue and yellow. He displays his ability to depict the textures of an earthenware bowl, a stoneware jug, a brass bucket, a wicker basket, a table cloth, a wooden foot stove and a fresh loaf of bread to perfection. Although traditional depictions of milkmaids and kitchen maids often contained romantic allusions it seems Vermeer rather wanted to pay tribute to the virtues of temperance, purity and hard work. Let me know which Vermeer painting is your favorite.

Johannes Vermeer, The Geographer, 1669, Oil on canvas, 53 x 47 cm, Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.
Johannes Vermeer, 1632–1675, created paintings that are among the most beloved and revered images in the history of art. Although only about 36 of his paintings survive, these rare works are among the greatest treasures in the world’s finest museums. These works are remarkable for their purity of light and form, qualities that convey a serene, timeless sense of dignity. They invite you to contemplate on the one hand and find a symbolic and allegorical meaning on the other. The Geographer is commonly considered a pendant to The Astronomer. Both paintings convey the theme of scholarly inquiry and discovery. The impact of the sciences expanded significantly in 17th century Holland. This situation is reflected in the way that numerous pictures of scholars in their studies were made. Some experts believe it was Anthoni van Leeuwenhoek who posed for both The Geographer and The Astronomer. Van Leeuwenhoek was well known for his discoveries with the microscope. Although no documents exist linking the scientist and Vermeer, they were both born in Delft in the same year. Vermeer gives us an intimate view of the scientist's thought process. Dressed in a Japanese-style robe, he is surrounded by cartographic objects that express the theme: a sea chart, globe, dividers, square and a cross-staff.

The German painter Hans Holbein painted this masterpiece shortly after he had settled for good in England. His amazing painting technique is shown to great advantage in the man’s intent gaze, in the shiny satin of his sleeves and in the little brass bell.
The Latin inscription tells us the identity of this nobleman: Robert Cheseman, 48 years old in 1533. Cheseman was the chief falconer to the English king Henry VIII, an honourable position. He is stroking the bird on his hand with a tender gesture.
