(Natural News) Glass is not a material typically associated with dental hygiene. Yet a team of researchers from Queen Mary University of London’s (QMUL) Institute of Dentistry is working on changing that. According to ScienceDaily.com, the researchers have developed a fast-dissolving “bioactive” glass that they’re putting in toothpaste called “BioMinC”, a new toothpaste that repairs decayed teeth. The toothpaste is an offshoot of their earlier product, “BioMinF” toothpaste. The key differences between these toothpastes is that the major component in BioMinF is fluoride-containing glass, while BioMinC has chlorine-containing glass. Compared to BioMinF, BioMinC has a more reactive glass and promotes formation of apatite at a more rapid pace. BioMinC works by forming a coating of crystalline hydroxyapatite, a chemical that serves as both a major component and important ingredient in normal teeth and bones. Hydroxyapatite normally gives bones and teeth their structure, while the hydroxyapatite in BioMinC imitates bone and teeth mineral to return lost minerals to decayed teeth. “This toothpaste is unique because it can put back the mineral lost from your teeth after consumption of an acidic drink, but without the use of fluoride. This isn’t just for people who have bad teeth, everyone can potentially benefit from using this new toothpaste,” said Robert Hill, Professor of Physical Sciences in Relation to Dentistry at QMUL. (Related: Study shows fluoride may not help teeth at all.) In addition to remineralizing teeth, another major benefit of BioMinC is that it can occlude patent dentinal tubules, which are minuscule canals in teeth that can detect stimuli and lead to hypersensitivity when teeth enamel are worn down. BioMinC decreases the risk of hypersensitivity by slipping into the tiny cracks of the teeth and breaks down upon contact with acid before the enamel does, in turn making the teeth all the more resistant to acidic foods and beverages. BioMinC will become available by the end of this year. It will be sold under the team’s spin-out company, BioMin Technologies Ltd., and the price is to be determined. While BioMinC holds a lot of promise, its efficacy ⬇

After a tumultuous start to life, baby Gisele and her mom, Liz Smith, a nurse from Massachusetts, have a new beginning. . . Brown-haired, blue-eyed baby Gisele, also from Massachusetts, had a rather rough start to life. After been born prematurely with neonatal abstinence syndrome — due to her birth mother’s use of heroin, cocaine, and methadone while pregnant, the infant was transferred to Franciscan Children’s hospital in Brighton a little after she turned 3 months old. She didn’t have a single visitor. Until one day, an unofficial “visitor” changed everything. . . In October of 2018, Gisele was legally adopted by Smith and today, is a happy and energetic 2-year-old who uses a supplemental feeding tube but also loves avocados and pizza. Both Smith and Giselle have found a family in each other and the nurse who cared for so many other children has, at last, found the one special daughter she will care for the rest of her life. . . #InternationalCoffeeDay Drinking Coffee Is Good For Your Heart . Its intense aroma and strong, bittersweet taste are not the only reasons that coffee is rich; it’s known to be loaded with active compounds and vitamins that have a variety of health-promoting characteristics. Indeed, slurping coffee regularly is thought to be associated with numerous benefits, such as a lower incidence of Parkinson’s and certain types of cancers, protects against diabetes, heart failure and stroke, and even reduced rates of DNA damage. Now, to add to this ever-growing list, it seems that consuming four cups of coffee a day could help protect cardiovascular cells from damage and also help them to repair. . It was Christmas Eve 1994, and James P. Allison was testing his theory that T cells, a type of white blood cell that fights viral and bacterial infections, could help the immune system fight cancer. That week, he was covering for a postdoc aide on a European trip, who’d injected cancerous mice with an antibody to activate T cells to go after tumors. The results were stunning: All of those given the antibody became cancer-free, while the mice not provided with the antibody saw their tumors grow until they eventually died. Allison ran back the experiment. But this time, the cancer didn’t respond. Allison grew frustrated. “I was being told, ‘You’re just foolish, this is never gonna work,’ ” he said in an interview with The Washington Post. “That was one that really pissed me off.” But when he returned four days later to check on his furry subjects, the tumors in the mice injected with the antibody had totally disappeared. “I went, ‘Wow,’ ” said Allison, 70. “That was a real turning point. I said, ‘Okay, we’re onto something here.’ I never expected that to happen. I did have a notion that if we could figure that out, then we might have a shot at cancer.” Almost a quarter-century later, after countless medical trials, doubt from his peers and uncertainty of whether a product based on his discovery would ever be available to the public, Allison was a co-recipient of the 2018 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for his work on how to use the body’s immune system to combat cancer. To date, Ipilimumab, known as “Ipi,” and other immuno-oncology drugs have treated nearly 1 million patients worldwide. Sipping a light beer in a hotel restaurant overlooking downtown Austin, Allison reminisced about his road from small-town Texan who lost multiple family members to cancer to barrier-breaking doctor whose story is now featured in “Breakthrough," a documentary that premiered earlier this month at the South by Southwest Film Festival. “If somebody tells me I can’t do something,” the Nobel Prize winner said, “you know, I don’t deal with that very well.” (By Timothy Bella) - #CraftingWellness #NobelPeacePrize #Science #CancerTreatment #MedicalNews #Research #CombatCancer

***WARNING: GRAPHIC VIDEO*** A family took video of the moment hospital staff members dropped one of their twin daughters on the hospital bassinet after she was born. The Rodgers' daughter has a germinal matrix hemorrhage on her brain, however, they are unsure if it's due to her having a low birth weight, or from being dropped. They want people to share this video to "prevent this from happening to other children being born at this hospital."
